Product Development Engineer - Electric Truck
Job Description:
1. Market Insights and Strategic Planning
- Responsible for market research, user profiling, and operational scenario analysis (ports, mining areas, trunk logistics, cross-border transportation, etc.) of heavy-duty truck tractors in key Southeast Asian countries, and producing insight reports for various sub-markets in Southeast Asia.
- Track global and Southeast Asian trends in electric heavy-duty truck technology and application scenarios, regularly produce research reports, and assist the company in advance planning.
- Understand the impact of Southeast Asian climate, infrastructure construction, policies and regulations on the new energy commercial vehicle industry, be familiar with local fleet operation models and pain points, driver habits, after-sales maintenance, dealer ecosystem, and local religious culture and lifestyle.
- Be familiar with the local supply chain system and distribution of heavy-duty truck tractors in Southeast Asia, and assist the business team in localised supply chain development and substitution.
2. Product Definition and Requirement Development
- Assist the R&D team in product positioning and defining core parameters for new energy commercial vehicles.
- For typical scenarios such as port short-haul, trunk logistics, and cross-border transportation, produce requirement documents for vehicles/powertrain/chassis/intelligent systems, specifying differentiated requirements such as high-temperature heat dissipation, waterproofing, dustproofing, corrosion resistance, and localized maintenance interfaces.
- Understand Chinese, Japanese, and European commercial vehicle products, prices, configurations, financial solutions, and service policies in Southeast Asia, and develop differentiated competitive strategies in terms of performance/configuration/service/operation/price.
3. Cross-departmental collaboration and ecosystem development
- Responsible for product launch pricing, configuration iteration, annual model updates, and phase-out strategies; track feedback from Southeast Asian markets, quality issues, operational data, and competitor dynamics to continuously optimise product competitiveness.
- Collaborate with local marketing and service teams to develop localized marketing, channel, finance, service, and battery recycling plans, and provide product selling points, technical training materials, and competitor response scripts.
- Analyse Southeast Asian policies and industry trends, such as zero-carbon ports, the electrification of mining areas, priority road rights, operational subsidies, tariff incentives, and local production policies, to seize policy opportunities.
- Assist in promoting local ecosystem cooperation, working closely with local battery manufacturers, supply chains, charging and battery swap networks, financial institutions, fleets, and government departments for deep collaboration.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree or above in Vehicle Engineering, Automotive Electronics, Mechanical Engineering or related disciplines.
- Over 5 years of experience in commercial vehicle product planning, with at least 2 years of experience in heavy truck product planning for the Southeast Asian market; have led complete market research and product planning for electric heavy trucks.
- Familiar with the electric heavy truck market capacity, growth trends, price ranges, mainstream brands, typical operational scenarios, and fleet structures in countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand.
- Have a profound understanding of key challenges in Southeast Asia such as high temperature and humidity, heavy load climbing, insufficient charging networks, and differences in driver habits.
- Understand local culture, religion, business culture, government relations, dealership ecosystem, and user preferences, and be able to transform cultural factors into product differentiation strategies.
- Familiar with the structure and working principles of electric heavy trucks, and knowledgeable about the powertrain, high-voltage safety, thermal management, chassis, and intelligent configurations.
- Capable of independently defining full vehicle parameters for electric heavy trucks, breaking down scenario-based requirements, formulating configuration strategies, estimating costs, and building TCO models.
- Familiar with battery swap/fast-charging technology routes, high-temperature adaptation of battery thermal management, energy recovery optimisation, and battery degradation compensation strategies, and able to develop technical solutions for Southeast Asian operating conditions.
- Familiar with CKD/SKD assembly in Southeast Asia, local parts supply chains and distribution, and tariff planning.
- Have keen market insight, data analysis capabilities, and competitive product benchmarking capabilities,
- Excellent project management skills, able to handle multiple tasks in parallel, coordinate across agencies, and communicate and promote efficiently.
