RN Circulator

As an RN Circulator, you will play a vital role in ensuring the safety and well-being of patients throughout the surgical experience. Working alongside surgeons, anesthesia providers, and the surgical team, you will coordinate patient care before, during, and after surgery while maintaining the highest standards of quality, safety, and sterile technique.
Essential Functions
The RN Circulator is expected to:
- Promote the mission, vision, and values of Boone Memorial Hospital.
- Assess patients according to established policies and procedures.
- Develop and implement individualized perioperative plans of care.
- Protect patients from injury caused by chemical, electrical, mechanical, thermal, and environmental hazards.
- Perform surgical counts to prevent unintended retained surgical items.
- Participate in surgical "Time Outs" to verify the correct patient, procedure, site, and positioning.
- Properly collect, label, and manage patient specimens.
- Communicate patient status and hand-off information throughout the continuum of care.
- Safely administer medications.
- Monitor and maintain patient physiological functions, including respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological, musculoskeletal, endocrine, gastrointestinal, and genitourinary systems.
- Maintain fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balance.
- Ensure patients maintain or return to normothermia following surgery.
- Implement measures to prevent surgical site infections.
- Assess patient and family educational needs.
- Educate patients and designated support persons regarding procedures, medications, pain management, wound care, nutrition, and recovery expectations.
- Encourage patient and family participation in the perioperative plan of care.
- Provide culturally competent, ethical, age-appropriate care within legal standards of nursing practice.
- Evaluate patient outcomes and modify care plans as appropriate.
- Transfer patient care safely and effectively.
- Delegate responsibilities in accordance with the West Virginia Nurse Practice Act.
- Accurately and thoroughly document nursing care.
- Collaborate effectively with physicians and interdisciplinary team members.
- Participate in quality improvement and performance improvement initiatives.
- Utilize problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills to foster positive working relationships.
- Prioritize patient care and prepare surgical supplies according to physician preference cards.
- Update preference cards as necessary.
- Demonstrate professionalism while pursuing continuing education and professional growth.
- Serve as a patient advocate while protecting patient privacy, dignity, and confidentiality.
- Assist with patient positioning and ensure patient comfort and safety.
- Maintain and enforce strict aseptic technique.
- Inspect, monitor, and ensure all surgical equipment is functioning properly.
- Complete instrument and supply counts before and after surgical procedures.
- Maintain required competencies and certifications.
- Float to other clinical services, when qualified.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Skills, Qualifications, and Competencies
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
- Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
Physical Demands
- Exposure to blood, body fluids, communicable diseases, chemicals, and radiation.
- Frequent repetitive motions.
- Push and pull heavy objects.
- Lift, transfer, and assist patients safely.
- Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
- Stand and walk for extended periods.
- Lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Work effectively in a fast-paced, high-stress environment.
Education and Experience
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of West Virginia.
- Two (2) years of perioperative/Operating Room nursing experience.
- Certified Nurse Operating Room (CNOR) certification preferred.
