Researcher / Research Analyst
The Global Research & Market Intelligence team delivers research to support client work and matters and to help you learn more about existing or prospective clients and industries. The team also works to ensure that we have the optimal selection of research tools and expertise to help build and sustain the Firm’s practices. Our goal is to provide research support to help you meet unique and complex clients and practice needs across the globe.
As a Researcher / Research Analyst, you will be responsible for responding to requests from lawyers in Tokyo across numerous different practice areas, as well as working closely with other Researchers to provide support across the network. Requests will be both legal and factual research, as well as requests around market intelligence and delving into market, sector and industry information.
You will be responsible for assisting lawyers to keep up to date on changes and developments within their practice areas. Whether regulatory changes or case summaries or information impacting the market and industry, you will assist in setting up alerts and also tracking this information to ensure our lawyers can keep their clients up to date.
You will be curious and interested to share your knowledge and research expertise, and work with lawyers when they need assistance and also when they need to learn about new tools and technology platforms.
You will enjoy working with people and creating relationships with colleagues across the global, in our Research & Market Intelligence team, as well as across the broader Practice Services and Innovation teams.
Key responsibilities include:
Provide research services—including case law, company searches, and market intelligence—to legal staff and administrative departments locally and globally.
Manage and monitor research requests using the Request Management System, collaborating with global Researchers and helping triage and prioritize inquiries.
Utilize a range of fee-based, print, and online resources efficiently and cost-effectively for research tasks.
Prepare and distribute practice-specific news alerts, regulatory updates, and current awareness newsletters.
Conduct company searches, maintain corporate search accounts, and research deal information to support M&A practices.
Monitor and report on legal, business, industry, regulatory, and regional news, creating alerts and newsletters as requested.
Organize and deliver training and orientation on research tools and knowledge management systems, and mentor trainees, associates, and students in research techniques.
Foster relationships with local vendors and assist with acquisitions and access to local resources.
Required skills and experience:
3-5 years of relevant and in-depth research experience, preferably with a global law firm, professional services firm, consultancy or court environment.
Native Japanese, with fluent business English
Knowledge of research in Bengoshi law is mandatory, and knowledge English law would be highly regarded
Comprehensive knowledge of legal and non-legal subject field resources, including content, search methodology and pricing.
High level of planning and time management skills, including the ability to multi-task and assign priorities effectively and work independently.
Comfortable working in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment across multiple offices and time zones
Understanding hard copy library management
Consistent accuracy and meticulous attention to detail while maintaining a very high level of productivity
Confident in communicating with stakeholders in a professional environment.
