Position Summary
Pagosa Springs Medical Center (PSMC) is seeking a skilled Emergency Department Registered Nurse (RN) to join our Emergency Department team in a part-time role providing 12-hour coverage every Friday.
The ED RN provides urgent and emergent nursing care for patients presenting to the Emergency Department. This role requires strong clinical judgment, the ability to rapidly assess patient conditions, prioritize care, and collaborate closely with physicians and interdisciplinary team members to stabilize and treat patients across a wide range of medical conditions.
The ideal candidate is confident working in a fast-paced emergency environment and committed to delivering compassionate, patient-centered care.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Assessment & Triage
- Triage patients using Emergency Severity Index (ESI) guidelines
- Perform comprehensive patient assessments and prioritize care based on acuity
- Monitor and reassess patient conditions throughout their ED stay
- Recognize and report changes in patient condition promptly
Emergency Patient Care
- Provide emergency nursing care to stabilize emergent and urgent conditions
- Initiate treatments including IV therapy, oxygen therapy, splints, EKGs, and other interventions as ordered
- Administer medications following the seven rights of medication administration
- Assist with emergency procedures and provider-performed treatments
- Manage pain control, fluid therapy, and patient monitoring
Care Coordination & Documentation
- Collaborate with physicians, specialists, and care teams
- Accurately document assessments, treatments, and patient progress in the electronic health record
- Provide patient and family education regarding diagnosis, treatment plans, and follow-up care
- Ensure discharge instructions and follow-up appointments are understood
Clinical Excellence
- Utilize National Patient Safety Goals in all aspects of patient care
- Maintain sterile technique and infection prevention standards
- Participate in departmental quality improvement initiatives
- Mentor and support new nursing staff when assigned
