Safety & Security Officer (3:00pm to 11:00pm)

Role Overview

The Safety & Security Officer plays a key role in creating a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for guests, staff, and animals at Zoo New England. Officers are frontline representatives of the organization, responsible for protecting people and property while also providing excellent customer service and responding calmly and professionally to safety concerns and emergencies.



Essential Job Functions

Ensure the safety and security of guests, staff, and animals by actively patrolling zoo grounds

Monitor surveillance systems, alarms, cameras, and access points

Respond promptly and appropriately to incidents, emergencies, and guest concerns

Provide first aid, CPR, and AED support when required

Maintain access control for restricted areas

Escort vendors, contractors, and inspectors as needed

Support guest services by providing directions and assistance

Complete accurate and timely reports and documentation



Duties & Responsibilities

Control access to buildings and restricted areas using keys, locks, ID systems, and visitor logs

Enforce zoo rules and regulations in a respectful, service-oriented manner

Conduct regular patrols of buildings and grounds to identify safety or security risks

Inspect fences, gates, doors, and barriers to detect potential breaches

Monitor crowd activity and intervene early to prevent escalation

Respond to complaints, incidents, and emergencies in accordance with training

Coordinate with outside agencies such as police and fire departments when necessary

Investigate incidents and suspicious activity and report findings to supervisors

Prepare detailed, accurate, and timely incident and shift reports

Protect guests, staff, animals, and organizational assets



Physical Requirements

Frequent walking and standing throughout zoo grounds, including uneven terrain

Occasional running or fast movement during emergency response

Ability to lift, carry, and position equipment or supplies up to 50 lbs

Ability to climb stairs or ladders and navigate varied environments safely

Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, and reach as required for inspections

Ability to observe safety concerns using sight, hearing (including radio), and smell



Work Conditions

Work performed in both indoor office settings and outdoor zoo environments

Exposure to varying weather conditions and temperatures

Primary assignment at Franklin Park Zoo; occasional coverage at Stone Zoo as needed

Flexible schedule required, including nights, weekends, and holidays



Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED

Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record

Basic computer and reporting skills

Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team with professionalism and sound judgment

Strong communication, listening, and customer service skills, with the ability to de-escalate situations effectively

Ability to remain calm, alert, and professional at all times

Ability to work respectfully with a diverse population and demonstrate inclusive practices

Ability to follow written and verbal instructions

Successful completion of a background check consistent with policy


Preferred Qualifications

Certificate or formal training in security, safety, or a related field

CPR/AED certification (or ability to obtain upon hire)
