Job Description:

Gelest, Inc., part of the Mitsubishi Chemical Group, is seeking a Safety Specialist to join our Environmental Health & Safety team at our Glen Rock, PA location. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to our mission of delivering innovative specialty chemical solutions to customers worldwide.

The Safety Specialist is responsible for evaluating, building, and providing training for Gelest staff on EH&S related topics. Additionally, the Safety Specialist will aid the EH&S staff in various tasks including documentation, writing SOPs and incident/near miss tracking and investigation.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Serve as a daily EH&S presence within Operations, including required participation in Operations morning meetings, to actively support and reinforce a strong safety culture.

  • Develop, evaluate, deliver, and maintain EH&S training programs through web-based and in-person instruction; mentor employees on EH&S topics and maintain all associated training documentation, certifications, and records.

  • Administer and maintain EH&S programs and systems, including the Respiratory Protection Program (respirator fit testing), forklift certification, Life Saving Rules engagement, and required state certifications.

  • Develop, review, update, and maintain EH&S standard operating procedures (SOPs), job safety analyses (JSAs), permits, and related documentation to ensure compliance with corporate, OSHA, EPA, and DEP requirements.

  • Conduct field-level EH&S activities, including PPE assessments, hazard inspections, GEMBA walks, LOTO verification, confined space and hot work permitting, line breaking, contractor safety coordination, and corrective action follow-up.

  • Inspect, maintain, and coordinate repairs for EH&S equipment and systems, including SCBA units, chemical fume hoods, eyewash stations, and safety showers.

  • Identify unsafe behaviors and conditions, proactively mitigate risks, and partner with departments to implement sustainable safety solutions.

  • Investigate incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions; administer incident records; perform root cause analyses (RCAs); track corrective actions; and prepare timely weekly and monthly incident status reports in accordance with corporate timelines.

  • Support OSHA recordkeeping requirements, including OSHA 300 log administration, and prepare and submit required regulatory reports and documentation (OSHA, EPA, DEP, etc.).

  • Participate in and support internal and external audits, including RC14001 documentation, audit preparation, findings resolution, and corrective action tracking.

  • Actively participate in the site Safety Committee and support corporate EH&S goals, initiatives, and continuous improvement efforts.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge/Skills/Experiences:

To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field from an accredited college/university preferred or equivalent industry experience.

  • OSHA, DOT, and EPA regulatory knowledge required. Industrial hygiene knowledge a plus.

  • Experience in the chemical industry a plus.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to conduct training.

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to react quickly to eliminate risks, identify unsafe behaviors and conditions.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

  • Wear personal protective equipment as needed.

  • Pass respirator fit test as required by OSHA.

  • Must be able to hear/see and respond to all communications and alarms.

  • Lift up to 25lbs.

  • Must have flexibility to cover evening training on a regular basis.

Supplemental Company Information

  • The salary range for this position is $60,000-$80,000 annually. Factors such as scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, job-related skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and business considerations may influence base pay offered. This salary will be subject to a geographic adjustment (according to a specific city and state), if an authorization is granted to work outside of the location listed in this posting.
