FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Hours: Full-time (1:00 PM - 11:00 PM with a 3-day weekend to include one weekend day)

Pay Rate: Starts at $16.50/hour

About the role:

Security Officers provide safety and security of the zoo property, animal collections and the security of employees and visitors. This position reports directly to the Supervisor of Security.

Duties and Responsibilities (include but not limited to):

  • Regular inspections of the zoo grounds and buildings during each shift, helping with the closing of buildings, monitoring animal safety, and assisting all late keepers.

  • Will work on a team and individually.

  • Escort fund transport.

  • Monitor closed circuit television.

  • Outside duties include patrolling all zoo parking lots and completing accident investigations involving zoo property, vehicles, and other property damage.

  • During a shift, nightly logs will be maintained.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must be at least eighteen years old.

  • Prior experience in the security field beneficial but not required.

  • EMT-B and/or medical training a plus.

  • Must have effective communication skills and the ability to work effectively with others.

  • Must be able to accurately relay information to other crew members, listen, and take direction.

  • Must have good organizational skills.

  • Applicants must be self-motivated and reliable.

Candidates might be (depending on position) required to pass a pre-employment background check, drug test, negative skin tuberculosis test, and possess a valid drivers license with a good history.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort:

  • Work in adverse weather conditions as the work environment is split between indoor and outdoor.

  • Will sometimes work extended/odd hours including weekends, holidays and some night programs.

  • Must be able to walk long distances across the zoo.

  • Must be able to stand, sit, kneel, bend, twist, reach above head and climb.

  • Will lift, push, pull, and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds using safe and proper lifting methods.
