Senior Communications Strategist

You’re the kind of communicator who doesn’t wait for a perfect brief. You take something messy, figure out what matters, and make it clear. You write well and you move fast, including with AI tools, without trading accuracy or judgment for speed.

About Fehr & Peers

We’re a transportation planning and engineering firm with 24 offices and more than 400 staff nationwide. Since 1985, we’ve partnered with public, private, and institutional clients to design and plan safer, more effective ways for people and goods to move. We bring together data, technology, and the experiences of the communities we serve to help clients make confident, well-informed decisions.

The Role

You’ll join our seven-person corporate communications team supporting a fast-moving, technically complex organization. Staff come to us with a headline and minimal context. Your job is to take those requests, clarify what’s needed, recommend a smart communications approach, and deliver strong final work.

You’ll focus on firmwide internal communications and external marketing content across channels like our intranet, LinkedIn, email, blog, presentations, templates, and webinars. This is an individual contributor role. You will own select channels and high-priority projects from intake through publishing, working in close coordination with our communications manager and designers.

This is a hybrid role based in Roseville. You’ll typically come into the office two days per week, with occasional travel to Walnut Creek (usually quarterly).

What You’ll Do

Own end-to-end delivery for your work

  • Take in messy requests, clarify what matters, and recommend an approach (audience, goal, message, channel, timing), aligned with team priorities.

  • Draft, revise, coordinate reviews, and publish deliverables with speed, accuracy, and strong judgment.

  • Manage multiple projects with limited direction. Set priorities, make reasonable assumptions, and flag risks, tradeoffs, and decision points early.

  • Deliver content across internal and external channels

    • Create internal communications that support firmwide clarity, knowledge-sharing, and change efforts (announcements, intranet posts, leader-facing messaging support).

    • Create external marketing communications that promote our services and expertise (LinkedIn, blog content, campaigns, high-visibility messaging support).

    • Translate technical work into clear, useful content while maintaining nuance and applying our brand voice and standards.

    • Own select channels and improve how they perform

      • Own day-to-day execution for assigned channels (for example intranet and LinkedIn), including planning, drafting, publishing, and upkeep, in coordination with the team.

      • Use analytics and qualitative feedback to recommend improvements to content, cadence, and channel approach, and implement approved changes.

      • Support storytelling tools and firmwide communications experiences

      • Develop and update presentations, templates, and other communications resources that help staff share work clearly and consistently.
      • Surface opportunities proactively

        • Spot and surface story leads and communications opportunities across the firm.

        • Connect with the right staff to gather context, then bring forward recommendations and drafts.

        • Use AI to accelerate your work, with judgment

          • Use AI to speed up synthesis, outlining, drafting, editing, and iteration.

          • Know when to slow down. Apply strong judgment about accuracy, sensitivity, and nuance, and recognize when additional review is essential.

Qualifications

We want someone who can operate with strong judgment, minimal direction, and high standards.

  • Experience: 5+ years in corporate communications, internal communications, marketing communications, or content strategy with demonstrated ownership in ambiguous environments. We care more about the quality and independence of your experience than the years.

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, or related field, or equivalent experience.

  • Proven ability to take messy inputs and produce clear recommendations and strong final deliverables across channels.

  • Excellent writing and editing, plus strong verbal communication and presence (comfortable talking through work live with staff and leaders).

  • Highly organized and proactive, with reliable workflows that keep projects moving.

  • Strong eye for detail and quality, including accuracy, consistency, and polish.

  • Comfortable working across all levels of the organization, from peers to senior leaders, and confident making recommendations to any of them.

  • Uses AI to accelerate work, with strong judgment about accuracy and sensitivity.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience owning channels or programs (not only producing individual deliverables).

  • Experience with intranet and knowledge tools (Teams, SharePoint, Box, WordPress).

  • Social media management experience, especially LinkedIn.

  • Analytics experience (Google Analytics or platform analytics).

  • Familiarity with the transportation, architecture, engineering, or construction (AEC) industry.

  • Agency experience in a communications, public relations, or marketing firm.
