Senior Engineer - Highways
At WSP – India GCC, the Senior Engineer – Highways is accountable for the end-to-end delivery of high-quality Roads & Highways design outputs, ensuring with Swedish engineering standards across all project stages. The role involves early-stage design involvement, proactive planning, and ownership of deliverables, with a strong focus on quality, timelines, and technical excellence in developing sustainable and efficient highway infrastructure.
Working within the Nordic (Swedish) business, the role requires leading geometric design, roadway modelling, and preparation of design documentation while managing multiple projects simultaneously. The Senior Engineer collaborates closely with teams across India and Sweden, ensuring seamless coordination, adherence to lead country requirements, and successful delivery of all project outputs with full accountability having relevant design/ junior team supervision.
- Design Leadership & Delivery:
Lead the design packages and delivery of highway design solutions, ensuring compliance with applicable standards, codes, and safety requirements while reporting to the Principal Engineer/Project Manager.
Take ownership of preparing and reviewing highway designs and drawings using tools such as Civil 3D, AutoCAD, Novapoint, etc., ensuring technical accuracy and quality.
Undertake detailed roadway design including alignments, junctions/intersections, carriageways, superelevation, and associated roadside features such as footways, cycleways, access points, and safety systems.
Plan, manage, and track design deliverables to meet project timelines, quality benchmarks, and regulatory requirements.
- Project Management & Coordination:
Support project planning by contributing to cost estimates, progress schedules, and resource allocation, considering project complexity and constraints.
Monitor progress against milestones, proactively identifying and communicating risks, dependencies, and mitigation measures to the Principal Engineer/Project Manager/Lead PM.
Lead coordination of RFIs and technical interfaces with other disciplines, lead region design leads, and other stakeholders to ensure timely inputs and approvals.
Provide technical support during design development phases, resolving design queries and ensuring alignment with design intent.
- Stakeholder Engagement & Design Team Leadership:
Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and other stakeholders to ensure seamless project delivery.
Lead and actively contribute to design reviews and constructability assessments, ensuring practical, efficient, and safe design solutions.
Provide technical direction during design development, identifying risks, driving solutions, and supporting decision-making for project advancement.
Mentor and train junior team members (Assistant Engineers, Engineers), fostering technical capability and ensuring consistent delivery standards.
Mentor and advise CAD Technicians on output workflows, standards and quality aspects.
- Quality, Compliance & Governance:
Take accountability for implementing quality control procedures and best practices to ensure consistency and accuracy of deliverables.
Conduct and oversee internal reviews, checks, and audits to ensure compliance with design standards, safety, and environmental requirements having followed the Nordics - Project Delivery Process.
Ensure adherence to Quality Assurance processes, maintaining proper documentation and ensuring all deliverables meet checking and approval protocols prior to submission.
Ensure adherence to WSP HSEQ standards and Business Management System (BMS).
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (Master’s preferred).
with 6–10 years of relevant experience in highways design, including international project exposure.
Strong knowledge of highway engineering and geometric design principles.
Well versed with alignments, carriageways, superelevation and embankment esign.
Proven experience across feasibility and detailed design stages.
Familiarity with international standards such as AASHTO, DMRB, TSRGD, and preferably Swedish/Nordic guidelines (e.g., Trafikverket VGU, ATB VÄG).etc.
Design Tools & Digital Skills: Advanced proficiency in Civil 3D (including Naviate/SAC) and AutoCAD.
Working knowledge of Novapoint, Navisworks, BIM tools, and digital coordination processes.
Demonstrated ability to lead small teams, manage project assignments, estimate effort, and deliver high-quality outputs within timelines and budget constraints.
Proven experience in mentoring junior engineers and driving team capability development.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary and international level project teams.
Capable in effectively presenting and resolve technical issues with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Strong analytical mindset with the ability to develop innovative, practical solutions under pressure; self-driven, accountable, and proactive in continuous learning and team development.
Sound understanding of QA processes, HSEQ standards, and adherence to organizational systems/BMS, ensuring compliance across all deliverables.
