Position Description

The Barrick Africa & Middle East Team are seeking to recruit a Senior Geotechnical Engineer - Open pit and Underground Design. This role reports to the Geotechnical Lead – AME and works with Geotechnical Managers, Geotechnical Specialist for Data and Rock Mass Models and site based Geotechnical and Geological Teams.

This role serves to provide an inhouse capability to carry out geotechnical open pit and underground designs to the Barrick AME standards. The role functions to carry out designs, and to train site based geotechnical engineers in design.

You will be expected to align to the Barrick DNA and to operate within our mining assets and with our teams. You will contribute in a safe and cost-effective manner towards achieving targets in accordance with Mine Safety Standards, Policies and Procedures.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Prepare geotechnical design guidelines.
  • Train site-based teams in sound design practices using the guidelines.
  • Carry out Geotechnical Domain and Design parameter selection and documenting these in the Design Basis Reports.
  • Carry out Geotechnical Design analysis for open pits and underground and document these in Design Specification Reports.
  • Carry out Geotechnical Risk Profile analysis for pit shells and underground mine plans. Train the site-based teams on using this information for the monthly optimisation meetings.
  • Provide an annual report/update on the Design Basis, Design Specifications and Risk Profile for each mining zone.
  • Carry out back analysis of slope instabilities, and relevant underground instabilities.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant standards, codes, and internal quality processes.

Qualification Requirements

  • Bachelors in Geology/Civil Engineering/Geotechnical Engineering
  • Masters in Geotechnical Engineering majoring in rock mechanics

Experience and Skills Requirements

  • Minimum of 6 years of experience in mining geotechnical engineering, including exposure to open pit and underground geotechnical design, preferably design studies that were subject to third party review.
  • Slope and underground mine design.
  • 2 and 3 dimensional stress modeling in RS2/3.
  • Limit Equilibrium analysis.
  • Rock mechanics and rock strength properties.
  • Proficient in Microsoft and Rocscience software suites.
  • Mining Geotechnical Engineering.
  • Spoken and written communication in English.
  • Strong mentoring capabilities.
  • Demonstrated safety mindset.
  • Effective collaboration, particularly with geology teams and across multiple sites.
  • Cross functional awareness to enable collaboration with mining stakeholders.
  • Proven problem‑solving skills.
  • Clear and proactive communication.
  • Must be willing and able to travel to all AME sites as required.
  • Must be capable of working remotely when not travelling.
