This role sits within Financial and Sustainability Risk and supports the Group’s oversight of investment risks across both public market and alternative assets, with a primary focus on alternatives asset classes including private equity, private credit, infrastructure, real estate, and other illiquid strategies. The role provides independent second-line risk oversight and works closely with the first-line investment teams and LBU second-line teams to ensure robust risk identification, monitoring, review, governance, and escalation, supporting sound investment decision-making, portfolio resilience, and compliance with internal policies and regulatory expectations.

Principal accountabilities:

  • Alternatives Risk Oversight: Provide independent second-line oversight across alternative investments (Private Equity, Private Credit, Real Estate, Infrastructure), covering key risk areas including, but not limited to, concentration, liquidity, credit/default, valuation, leverage, and exit risks.
  • Independent Risk Reviews & Constructive Challenge: Conduct independent risk reviews and provide rigorous analytical insight and challenge on investment initiatives including investment mandates, manager/fund due diligence, new asset classes/instruments, and material portfolio actions.
  • Portfolio Monitoring & Framework Enhancement: Perform ongoing oversight to identify, evaluate, and escalate performance drivers and emerging risks within the Group’s alternatives portfolio. Apply a principles-based approach to build, enhance, and harmonise risk management frameworks for alternative assets where appropriate.
  • Risk Mitigation & Policy Compliance: Support the development and implementation of risk mitigation strategies, ensuring investments are managed in line with internal policies and standards, and applicable regulatory expectations.
  • Valuation and Credit Oversight Challenge: Provide independent second-line review and challenge of first-line processes and outcomes for valuation and credit assessment, including the reasonableness of methodologies, key assumptions, and judgments, ensuring they are robust, consistently applied, and appropriately governed.
  • Scenario Analysis & Stress Testing: Develop and apply stress tests and scenarios, translating results into decision-useful outputs (key vulnerabilities, mitigants, monitoring enhancements, and escalation recommendations).
  • Risk Reporting, Stakeholder Engagement & Regulatory Interface: Support risk reporting to senior management and regulators; represent Group Risk in engagements with Group and Local Investment/Risk teams on investment risk matters.
  • Risk Culture Enablement: Champion a risk-aware culture for alternatives and ensure the monitoring framework and practices remain aligned with relevant industry standards and evolving market practices.
