Role summary:
Help build and improve secure, reliable, and automated on-prem and cloud infrastructure that supports important business and engineering outcomes at athenahealth. This role is based in Bangalore - Whitefield, India and follows a hybrid work model. As a Senior Member of Technical Staff, you will contribute to infrastructure automation, provisioning, configuration, and operational improvements across on-prem and cloud environments, while partnering with engineering and technical operations teams to strengthen platform reliability and efficiency. This position requires a blend of Windows and Linux server administration expertise, along with proficiency in modern programming languages. This role is well suited for someone early in their career who is building hands-on experience with multi-cloud Infrastructure as Code, and scripting in a production environment. This person will report to the Manager Engineering - Tech Ops.

Team summary:
We are seeking a Senior Member of Technical Staff to join our Windows team within the Cloud Engineering (CE) division. The CE team ensures the continuous availability of the technologies and systems that support athenahealth’s services, managing thousands of servers and petabytes of storage while handling numerous web requests per second.

Our team of engineers focuses on reliability, automation, and scalability in a cloud-native environment. We operate within an agile framework to align with high-impact business and technical priorities, continuously evaluating opportunities for automation and platform improvements.

We support systems across both private and public cloud environments, using data and operational insights to inform decisions on architecture, performance, cost, and resiliency. Our efforts are dedicated to enhancing the systems and tools that enable engineering teams to operate efficiently and safely, including automating manual processes, standardizing infrastructure patterns, and improving observability. We collaborate closely with peers across engineering and operations, sharing knowledge and seeking practical solutions to simplify complex infrastructure challenges, allowing teams to focus on delivering value.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Manage Windows Server Administration, including Active Directory, Group Policy, and Clustering.

  • Oversee Linux Server Administration, including deployments, package management, and patching

  • Develop and maintain scripts in modern programming languages such as C#, PowerShell, Python, and Shell scripting to automate operational tasks, environment setup, configuration changes, and routine maintenance activities.

  • Build and maintain on-prem and Azure infrastructure components to support secure, reliable, and scalable platform operations to ensure optimal performance.

  • Develop Infrastructure as Code solutions using ARM templates, Bicep, Terraform, and related IaC tools to provision and manage cloud resources consistently.

  • Integrate AI tools into workflows to enhance productivity and streamline processes.

  • Utilize CI/CD software and tools such as Git, Jenkins, Harness, Artifactory, and Azure DevOps for efficient deployment.

  • Manage large fleets of Windows servers using configuration management tools like Puppet, Chef, or Ansible.

  • Collaborate with development teams to implement behavior-driven development test frameworks such as Pester or Selenium.

  • Maintain familiarity with relational databases, particularly Microsoft SQL, to support application needs.

  • Utilize virtualization solutions such as vCenter and VMware to optimize resource allocation and management

  • Support cloud infrastructure deployments, system configuration, and environment updates across development, test, and production environments.

  • Monitor platform health, availability, and performance, and assist with troubleshooting infrastructure issues to improve service reliability, utilizing tools such as Promteheus, Grafana, Datadog, and Splunk

  • Collaborate with engineering and technical operations partners to implement infrastructure changes that align with security, compliance, and operational standards.

  • Document infrastructure designs, deployment procedures, configuration standards, and support processes to improve repeatability and team effectiveness.

  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts by identifying opportunities to reduce manual work, simplify workflows, and strengthen operational resilience.

  • Apply AI tools, where available and appropriate, to speed up scripting, summarize operational findings, troubleshoot infrastructure issues, and learn new platform capabilities while validating outputs for accuracy, security, and relevance.

Additional Job Responsibilities:

  • Assist with proof-of-concept work for new application services, automation approaches, or infrastructure patterns.

  • Participate in code reviews and team discussions to improve script quality, IaC consistency, and operational practices.

  • Contribute to internal knowledge-sharing resources on Azure services, automation techniques, and infrastructure standards.

  • Help maintain dashboards, reports, or alerts that improve visibility into on-prem and cloud usage, health, and operational trends.

  • Support incident reviews by gathering technical details and helping identify follow-up improvements.

  • Partner with peers to test recovery procedures, backup processes, and infrastructure changes in non-production environments.

  • Learn and apply athenahealth engineering standards, security expectations, and operational best practices in day-to-day work.

Expected Education & Experience:

  • 4 to 6 years of experience in cloud infrastructure, platform engineering, technical operations, or a related technical role.

  • Hands-on Windows and Linux Administration and troubleshooting

  • Experience with Microsoft Azure services and core cloud infrastructure concepts.

  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code using ARM templates, Bicep, Terraform, or similar IaC tools.

  • Practical, hands-on experience with PowerShell scripting for automation, configuration, or operational support tasks.

  • Understanding of core infrastructure concepts such as compute, networking, storage, identity, access management, and monitoring in cloud environments.

  • Familiarity with version control, deployment workflows, and environment configuration practices utilizing tools such as Jenkins, Harness, Git, Bitbucket, etc.

  • Ability to troubleshoot technical issues methodically and communicate findings clearly with team members.

  • Ability to write and maintain clear technical documentation for repeatable operational processes.

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
