Job Description
Are you a sharp, detail-oriented editorial professional ready to shape the daily coverage of one of Australia's premier newsrooms? Reporting directly to the Head of Production, The Sydney Morning Herald, you will champion high-quality journalism, help mentor production staff, and thrive in a fast-paced, breaking news environment. In this role, you will elevate storytelling across multiple formats, ensuring exceptional copy, engaging digital presentation, and strategic story promotion.
Day to day you will:
Sub-edit, fact-check, and rewrite stories to ensure flawless grammar, style and legal compliance in roles across the Herald’s publishing desk.
Craft high-impact, accurate headlines, write-offs, and captions to optimise reader engagement and SEO.
Enhance editorial content with dynamic digital assets, including videos, graphics, and multimedia.
Collaborate closely with reporters, topic editors, and fellow production staff to meet tight deadlines.
Support the Head of Production by stepping into people management and newsroom leadership tasks, as required.
What you'll bring:
Proven experience in online news publishing.
Superior command of the English language, grammar and syntax.
Sound news judgment with the ability to work quickly and accurately under pressure.
Strong knowledge of legal best practices, including defamation and contempt laws.
Proven capability to work independently and collaboratively across a diverse newsroom team.
Prior experience or familiarity with managing homepages, analytics tools, print sub-editing and/or layout is advantageous.
Prior leadership or team management experience is desirable.
Willingness to work across morning, afternoon and evening shifts, when required.
