Responsibilities

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Software Engineer in the AI Business Unit with a minimum of 7 years of experience in software engineering, product development, or technical business analysis to join our Packaged Genies & Marketplace Engineering team. In this role, you will be the analytical and operational backbone of the team — bridging engineering and product by translating business requirements into structured technical artifacts, driving competitive intelligence, and ensuring delivery stays on track. You will work closely with the Technical Owner to keep the Packaged Genies portfolio well-defined and well-researched, and to move it forward, while maintaining sufficient engineering depth to engage credibly with the team on implementation decisions.

Analytical & Product Responsibilities

Beyond engineering, you will take on structured groundwork responsibilities that support the Technical Owner in making informed product and design decisions:

  • Technical Competitive Research: Monitor the agentic AI and enterprise automation landscape — tracking competitors and emerging AI-native players. Produce structured, factual summaries of competitor capabilities, gaps, and positioning that feed into product and design discussions.
  • Differentiator Analysis: Research and document the technical capabilities of Workato Packaged Genies across measurable dimensions — integration depth, orchestration complexity, configurability, performance, and Marketplace reach — producing factual comparison data that leadership uses for positioning decisions. This is an analytical input role; strategic positioning conclusions are owned by Product Management.
  • Jira Story Preparation: Based on direction from the Technical Owner, decompose requirements into well-structured Jira epics and stories with clear descriptions, acceptance criteria, dependencies, and effort context. Facilitate story refinement sessions to ensure the team has sufficient clarity to execute.
  • Deliverable Tracking: Maintain sprint-level visibility into Packaged Genies delivery — tracking progress against commitments, surfacing blockers early, and keeping the Technical Owner informed with concise, accurate status updates.

Engineering Responsibilities

You will contribute directly to engineering execution with a focus on quality, performance, and reliability of Genie experiences:

  • Design and optimize Genies for end-user experience quality — including response latency, token efficiency, and execution performance across multi-system workflows.
  • Instrument and maintain feedback loops within Genie interactions — capturing user signals, surfacing failure patterns, and contributing to iterative self-improvement of Genie behavior over time.
  • Develop and configure Agentic Apps and Packaged Genies using Workato's Agent Studio, contributing to implementation under the direction of the Technical Owner.
  • Review and validate Skill logic, orchestration patterns, and integration configurations — providing structured feedback grounded in both technical and business context.
  • Troubleshoot issues across multi-system integrations and escalate findings with clear, well-documented analysis.
  • Contribute to engineering documentation — covering implementation decisions, integration patterns, and best practices — ensuring knowledge is accessible and current.
  • Participate in code reviews with a focus on correctness, maintainability, and alignment with requirements.

Requirements

Qualifications / Experience / Technical Skills

  • 7+ years of experience spanning software engineering, technical business analysis, or product-focused engineering roles.
  • Strong ability to translate complex business and technical requirements into structured artifacts — user stories, acceptance criteria, and process flows — with hands-on familiarity in at least one programming language (Ruby, Python, or Java) sufficient to engage credibly with engineering teams.
  • Experience working closely with engineering teams in an Agile environment — preparing and refining Jira stories, tracking sprint delivery, and facilitating cross-functional alignment.
  • Hands-on experience with integrations, APIs, and authentication flows across enterprise systems (CRM, HRMS, ITSM, IAM, ERP), with the ability to operate confidently at the intersection of business requirements and technical implementation.
  • Demonstrated awareness of LLM performance considerations — including latency optimization, token usage management, and techniques for improving response quality and reliability in production agentic systems.
  • Experience with workflow automation, orchestration, low-code platforms, or AI/ML-powered systems; familiarity with prompt engineering or LLM-based systems is a strong plus.
  • Excellent communication skills, genuine interest in AI agents and agentic workflows, and comfort working closely with senior engineering and product leadership in a fast-paced environment.
