Raytheon Australia was selected in December 2020 to provide Capability Lifecycle Management Services to the Commonwealth for its fleet of Minor Vessels. This is an important Capability for the RAN. The fleet of Minor Vessels are spread across WA, NT and QLD. As a System Safety Engineer you will work alongside the other Engineering Authorities to liaise with our stakeholders, conduct engineering assessments, review and support the approval of Engineering Change Proposals (ECPs). Demonstrating advanced technical theories, methodologies, principles and expertise to provide innovative solutions to the current phase of the project, you will be alert to cost and schedule constraints.

Your new role will also provide you with the opportunity to learn, share knowledge and be mentored on System Safety Engineering methodology and processes. Enabled by the support of the Engineering Manager, you will also be enrolled in our national Systems Engineering network. Working in a friendly team to meet the needs of our customer - the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), your role involves direct engagement with peers, Australian Defence Force personnel, capability partners, sub-contractors and suppliers.

Key Responsibilities

  • As the technical interface between the customer, management and the implementation team, conduct systems analysis to derive function, performance and interface requirements to meet system safety parameters.
  • Engage with System Design activities (including trade studies) to ensure that the system safety artefacts are compatible with the baselined product; consistent across all subsystems, delivering system design to meet performance requirements.
  • Perform technical risk analysis as required in your work as the safety engineer to support development and review of hazard logs, safety case arguments and risk mitigation actions.
  • Understand the systems safety engineering methodology, tools and procedures required to complete the tasks assigned.
  • Collaborating with internal and external stakeholder; securing Raytheon’s reputation as a trusted partner in delivering systems integration and mission support solutions to our customers.
  • Lead the planning, co-ordination, and conduct of system safety working groups.
  • Key spokesperson on system safety considerations, capabilities and future direction in accordance with Raytheon and customer policies and processes.
  • Provide technical mentoring and/or leadership. Provide guidance to other team members on system safety engineering methodology and processes.


Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • Tertiary Qualification in relevant engineering discipline, (eg , one or more of electrical, electronic, structural or mechanical backgrounds); holding as a minimum tertiary qualifications and professional development sufficient to attain recognition as CPEng.
  • Experience in an Engineering discipline including involvement in one or more of the following Engineering practices - Requirements Definition, Management, Analysis, Design and Verification and Validation.
  • Experience in effectively representing Engineering professional services to both internal and external customers.
  • This position may require availability to travel when required.
