Job Summary

As an Engineer in the Communications Section, the Senior Systems Engineer is accountable for applying technical knowledge in preparing plans and designs, completing large Engineering projects, providing advice and technical leadership for life-cycle management of the systems and equipment in the Section’s area of responsibility.

The Senior Systems Engineer has a thorough specialized knowledge of systems in the Specialty / Sub–specialty area of responsibility. This knowledge is supplemented with significant experience working with the systems in the field environment through design, installation and life-cycle support, and incorporates a thorough understanding of system interrelationships and operational use.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Provides technical support for national capital program development and formulation of national strategies to meet operational needs
  • Develops plans to meet project or site-specific requirements
  • Prepares detailed plans, system designs, and specifications for the provision and implementation of electronic systems to meet operational, technical and safety requirements
  • Provides prompt assistance when requested to investigate technical problems with in-service operational systems
  • Actively promotes a Safety and Quality culture within the Specialty which ultimately will be reflected in the quality of the finished product delivered to the client groups

Job Requirements

Education:

  • Graduation with a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university in electrical, electronics or computer engineering.
  • Professional Certification: Member or eligible to be a member in a Professional Engineering Association in Canada.

Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years work experience as an Engineer in the planning, design and implementation of safety or mission critical systems
  • Extensive experience with system documentation and working with clients to gather requirements/design specifications
  • Extensive experience preparing verification procedures

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of Voice Communications systems such as Voice Switches, PBXs, VHF Radios, Voice Recording solutions
  • Good working knowledge of OT infrastructure concepts, such as hypervisors, container orchestration, layer 2 and layer 3 networks
  • Strong knowledge of theory and principles of engineering science and of the practices in specialized field of engineering
  • Strong knowledge of Professional engineering standards and practices
  • Strong knowledge of functions and requirements of the Operational use and needs of Voice Communications Requirements
  • Good working knowledge of the NAV CANADA organizational structure and responsibilities
  • Thorough knowledge and demonstrated skills in project management methodologies, techniques and disciplines for large projects

Abilities:

  • The ability to apply knowledge and experience to develop new solutions, designs and plans
  • The ability to systematically analyze and resolve complex problems
  • Ability to plan, conduct and/or review comprehensive studies, to prepare and/or review reports on specific aspects of unusual problems with existing or proposed operations or facilities
  • Ability to analyze, investigate, evaluate, make decisions and implement solutions
  • Ability to write specification, standards, statements of work and general engineering documents

  • The ability to identify unusual problems and critical areas that may affect other work and in effectively applying standards, specifications, precedents and resources

Working conditions:

  • Occasional national and international travel required.

Flexible work arrangements:

  • This position is a hybrid position with a minimum – 3 days per week on site.
