We have an opportunity for an experienced Senior Technical Specialist to join Cloud Platforms team and support our infrastructure services to progress the design, build and implementation of Technology and Infrastructure Solutions to meet our business and customer's needs.

This is an Auckland or Wellington based role and is a hybrid role with three days in the office per week.

What are some of the day to day tasks the person in this role will complete?

Deliver Outcomes: Lead the delivery of complex features, systems, or technical initiatives, balancing speed, quality, and alignment with strategic goals. Take responsibility for on-call participation and production support within your domain, helping maintain reliability and respond to incidents effectively.

Demonstrate Technical Excellence: Apply advanced engineering knowledge to design and build robust, scalable systems. Make technical decisions that account for long-term sustainability and operational impact.

Solve Problems: Navigate ambiguity, shape problem definitions, and propose practical, effective solutions. Guide others through problem solving and system design.

Collaborate and Influence: Build strong relationships across disciplines. Influence technical direction through clear communication, structured thinking, and constructive challenge.

What projects / mahi (work) will the candidate be working on now and into the next year?

The candidate will play a key role in BNZ’s significant migration from on-premise infrastructure to AWS New Zealand. A core focus will be helping ensure the transition delivers a customer experience that is as frictionless, reliable, and repeatable as possible.

What is the most exciting thing about this opportunity?

You’ll have the opportunity to be doing highly visible, measurable work while mentoring others and influencing how engineers across the bank build, deploy, and run cloud services.

What is the most challenging thing about this opportunity?

The biggest challenge will be bringing the AWS and Azure teams together to work cohesively, while aligning practices where it makes sense.

We’re looking for someone who is curious about emerging technology and trends, motivated by team success, and eager to share knowledge and lift the capability of those around them.

You’ll bring a sharp eye for identifying performance issues, along with the ability to resolve them and continuously improve systems and processes based on those learnings.

What specific tech skills would be beneficial?

We are looking for people with solid knowledge in any of the following areas to help us on our tech journey:

Experience working with AWS & Azure technologies in an enterprise environment as a senior technical specialist or similar role
Workflow Automation experience - tools like Ansible and Ansible Tower and Jenkins., terraform
Software Content management platforms, like Satellite, SCCM, AD and Group Policy, and DNS.
Infrastructure experience - both on-prem bare-metal and virtual platforms, as well as an understanding of public cloud offerings.
Experience and understanding of application security techniques and principles.
Experience with Infrastructure build, application server setup, configuration and automation
Ability to apply security, OAuth 2.0, TLS, certificates, KeyStore, and Trust store for the platform
Good understanding of REST API, JSON, TCP/IP and Load balancers
DevOps/Agile/SCRUM/KANBAN
