Senior UI/UX Designer

Location: Nairobi | Department: Product | Reports to: Head of Product | Job type: Permanent

The Mission: A Welcome Guest in every African home

At Roamtech, our mission is to be a welcome guest in every African home. We believe that for a digital product to earn a place in someone’s home, it must be trusted, valuable, and intuitive. We don't just build software; we are building part of the daily rhythm of life across the continent.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a Senior Product Designer who cares more about outcomes (did we solve the user’s problem?) than outputs (did we make a pretty wireframe?).

You will join a lean, empowered product team. We currently have "fires" to put out—specifically around retention and core usability across our product lineup. We aren't looking for someone to just polish the UI; we need someone to dig into the friction points, understand why users are struggling, and design the solutions that make them stay.

You will work as a peer alongside Product Managers and Engineering Leads (the Product Trio) to discover, validate, and deliver solutions that work for our business and our customers.

What you will actually do

  • Lead Product Discovery: You won't just wait for requirements. You will work with the PM to interview customers, test hypotheses, and figure out what we should build before we invest engineering time.

  • Fix the Leaks (Retention & Usability): You will take ownership of our core user flows. Your immediate focus will be identifying usability gaps that are hurting retention and turning those interactions into moments of delight.

  • Design for the African Context: You understand that "good design" in Silicon Valley isn't always "good design" in Nairobi or Lagos. You will design for varying device capabilities, data constraints, and local mental models.

  • Rapid Prototyping: You will use Figma (or whatever tool works) to create prototypes that simulate the experience, allowing us to test our ideas with real users quickly.

  • System Thinking & Scalability: You will work alongside our other Senior Designer to stabilize and evolve our design system, ensuring consistency without slowing down innovation. You’ll anticipate where systems may break as new features and products are introduced.

  • Create a design system: You’ll play a key role in defining a unified design system that supports our various products, balancing standardization with flexibility for innovation.

    How you work

    • You fall in love with the problem, not the solution. You are comfortable scrapping a design if the data says it’s not working.

    • You design for trust. You understand that in our market, clarity and transparency are the difference between a user for life and a churned account.

    • You are autonomous. You don't need a manager to tell you what to do next. You see a drop in conversion, and you investigate it.

What you bring to the table

      • 5+ years of experience shipping real products (Web & Mobile). You have a portfolio that shows how you solved problems, not just final UI shots.

      • Strong Interaction Design skills. Visuals matter, but the flow matters more. You understand state, feedback loops, and how a user moves through a complex system.

      • Experience with Data. You don't need to be a data scientist, but you should be comfortable looking at retention cohorts or funnel drop\-offs to inform your design decisions.

      • No Ego. You are happy to pair with engineers to tweak CSS, and you are open to feedback from customer support teams who know the users best.

        Why join Roamtech now?

        • Impact: We are at a pivot point where improving our UX directly translates to business survival and growth. Your work will move the needle.

        • Culture: We treat designers as strategic partners, not service providers. You will have a seat at the table where decisions are made.

        • Mission: You are helping build technology that respects and serves the African household.
