Shipping Supervisor

The Shipping Supervisor is responsible for providing the necessary leadership to ensure that the shipping team achieves their department objectives; items are prepared, shipped, and received on time while complying with company policy. The Shipping Supervisor supports, coaches, trains, and creates a safe space for their team to be successful.
Responsibilities & Duties:
Shipping Operations
- Prepare and maintain documentation for dangerous goods in compliance with all applicable regulations.
- Monitor inventory levels of shipping supplies and initiate replenishment orders as required.
- Schedule and coordinate freight shipments to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery.
- Perform hands-on shipping operations as needed, including operating a forklift.
- Generate and maintain required shipping and compliance reports.
Leadership and Training
- Train and coach employees on all job functions to ensure key performance indicators (KPI) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are being followed and met.
- Promote a high-performance culture by setting clear expectations, conducting performance reviews, and providing feedback and coaching, ensuring employees are following company policies and procedures.
- Identify risks and opportunities for improvement, analyze them, and support the implementation of corrective actions.
- Maintain an excellent work climate, valuing participative management, communication, and the search for improvement.
- Lead pre-shift team meetings to communicate priorities, safety topics, and operational updates.
- Ensure employees perform job responsibilities with a strong focus on accuracy, particularly in scanning and inventory control.
- Partner with People & Culture to support the recruitment, interviewing, and hiring of new employees, ensuring alignment with operational needs and company standards and supporting onboarding to ensure successful integration of new employees.
Health & Safety
- Ensure employees follow applicable health and safety regulations and standards, including those established by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
- Ensure and promote compliance with Medisca’s safety guidelines.
- Ensure that all health and safety requirements are being met and that employees are working safely at all times.
- Conduct investigations following incidents/accidents and propose action plans.
- Be an active member of the Spill Response Team.
Warehouse Management
- Understand, implement and sustain 5S methodology within the department and shipping dock area (process mapping of area and functional layout of the 5S area).
- Responsible for reducing the amount of departmental overtime every week and for reducing the total unit cost per order weekly.
- Review, verify, and approve employee timesheets to ensure accuracy, compliance with company policies, and timely payroll processing.
- Serve as backup for other department supervisors by leading daily huddles as needed, ensuring clear communication of priorities, safety topics, and operational updates.
- Initiate maintenance work orders and coordinate with the Maintenance team to address facility and equipment needs.
- Maintain high standards of housekeeping, cleanliness, and organization throughout the facility.
- Ensure the facility is properly secured at the close of business.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by operational leadership to support business needs.
Physical Requirements:
- Comfortable performing physical tasks, including bending, twisting, reaching, kneeling, squatting, and standing for an extended period of time
- Must be able to work in personal protective equipment (Tyvek suits, respirator mask, PAPR, gloves, etc.) in compliance with safety and cleanliness standards
- Must be able to wear steel-toe or composite-toe shoes
- Must be able to climb ladders on occasion
- Must be able to operate power equipment, such as forklifts, Pallet Jacks, Order Pickers, etc
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma
- Five (5) years’ experience leading a team.
- Five (5) to eight (8) years’ experience in shipping.
- A strong leader with a positive attitude and the ability to coach others.
- Certified in DOT, IATA and IMDG regulations.
- Knowledge of OSHA/CNESST regulations required.
- Forklift experience an asset
- Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills.
- Able to influence others & manage conflict.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills.
- Excellent communication skills; fluent English (oral & written) required.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel) and Syspro is an asset.
- Availability to work occasional weekends when needed.
