A little more about your role…

The role will involve a mixture of office-based and site-based work, with opportunities to undertake field surveys, collect and manage data, and contribute to technical reports. You will work closely with colleagues from Ground & Water, Nature Advisory, Landscape, Environmental Planning and Sustainability teams, gaining valuable experience across a range of environmental disciplines.

WSP offers flexible working arrangements, combining home working with travel to project sites and WSP offices as required. You will be supported by experienced soil scientists and environmental professionals who will help you develop your technical knowledge and professional skills.

You will assist in undertaking field surveys and site visits, supporting the preparation of Agricultural Land Classification (ALC) assessments, Soil Resource Assessments and soil-related technical inputs for Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and construction projects. You will also support colleagues in the collection, management and interpretation of data, liaise with clients and stakeholders under supervision, and contribute to high-quality technical reporting.

The post will sit within our Ground & Water team, part of WSP's Earth & Environment business.

A typical week would include:

  1. Assisting with soil surveys, Agricultural Land Classification (ALC) surveys and soil resource assessments, including fieldwork, sampling and data collection.
  2. Supporting the preparation of technical reports and project deliverables for planning, EIA and construction projects.
  3. Working with experienced colleagues to develop your understanding of soil science, agricultural land issues and environmental assessment processes.

We'd love to hear from you if you have:

  • A degree in Soil Science, Environmental Science, Physical Geography, Geology or a related discipline.
  • Relevant experience in soil science, environmental consultancy, land management or a related field.
  • An interest in Agricultural Land Classification (ALC), soil resource surveys and soil management.
  • Good fieldwork skills and a willingness to work outdoors in varying conditions.
  • An understanding of UK environmental legislation and the role of soils within development projects.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • A willingness to learn and develop technical skills through training and practical experience.
  • A basic understanding of GIS software would be advantageous but is not essential.
  • Membership of, or interest in joining, a relevant professional body such as the British Society of Soil Science (BSSS).
  • The ability to get to remote project destinations within the UK.
