This role is responsible for shaping technical strategy, reducing architectural and cybersecurity risk, and ensuring software solutions meet product, clinical, regulatory, and business objectives. You will partner across software, hardware, systems, product management, clinical, quality, and cybersecurity teams to deliver reliable, scalable, and secure embedded platforms. The ideal candidate is a recognized embedded software expert who combines deep hands-on technical capability with enterprise-level influence, strong mentoring skills, and the ability to guide complex technical decisions with minimal direction.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead embedded software architecture, design strategy, and technical decision-making for new product development and sustaining engineering programs.
Prototype, design, build, and deliver software for existing and next-generation embedded platforms while evaluating appropriate design methodologies, tools, and technology choices.
Partner with software, hardware, systems, applications, product management, clinical, quality, and cybersecurity teams to optimize system performance, usability, reliability, security, and regulatory readiness.
Provide technical leadership in software requirements, architecture, design documentation, code quality, design reviews, and risk-based engineering practices.
Lead or guide unit testing, software verification strategy, static analysis, debugging, and hardware/software integration at the platform level.
Contribute to cybersecurity threat modeling, vulnerability assessment, secure design practices, and risk management for connected medical devices.
Mentor senior engineers, influence engineering standards, and raise the technical capability of the embedded software organization.
Engage with external vendors, partners, and customer-facing technical stakeholders as needed to support product development and platform success.
Occasional travel to vendor and customer sites may be required on an as-needed basis.
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Computer Science, or a related scientific discipline, or equivalent medical device software development experience.
20+ years of embedded software development experience, including significant work in regulated industry environments, preferably medical devices.
Expert-level proficiency in C or C++, Linux, RTOS, microcontroller, low-level driver, and hardware interface development experience.
Strong experience with real-time embedded software, multi-threaded or multi-tasking systems, and hardware/software integration.
Experience with embedded communications and interfaces such as SPI, I2C, UART, USB, Ethernet, BLE, or similar technologies.
Demonstrated ability to lead software architecture, technical design reviews, design tradeoff analysis, and platform-level technical decision-making.
Experience integrating algorithms into embedded devices and optimizing software for performance, reliability, memory, and power constraints.
Experience with software testing, static analysis, debugging, and hardware/software interface tools such as ICE or JTAG.
Working knowledge of secure embedded software design, cybersecurity risk management, and safety-critical system considerations.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Proven ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams, external vendors, and partners in complex product development environments.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience developing software for medical devices or other safety-critical regulated products.
Understanding of IEC 62304, ISO 14971, FDA software development expectations, and software validation practices.
Experience serving as a principal, distinguished, staff, architect, or senior technical authority in an engineering organization.
Experience with commercial RTOS platforms, embedded Linux, or embedded Windows environments.
Experience with toolchain selection, build environment setup, CI/CD practices, and software development infrastructure.
Familiarity with networking protocols, wireless technologies, Bluetooth, and connected device architectures.
Familiarity with laboratory instruments such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and protocol analyzers.
Expertise in cybersecurity protocols, secure software lifecycle practices, and safety-critical system development.
Experience with software test automation, verification strategy, and quality-focused engineering practices.
