The Senior Programmer Analyst performs advanced bioinformatics and clinical programming activities that support the statistical and computational aspects of research projects. This role works independently as a Lead Programmer on selected moderately complex studies and serves as a key study team member on more complex projects under the guidance of senior leadership. The Senior Programmer Analyst also provides mentorship, training, and technical guidance to junior team members while contributing to process improvements and departmental initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Study Leadership and Project Management
- Act as the Lead Programmer on selected studies of moderate complexity.
- Collaborate directly with project leaders and client representatives to establish project goals, timelines, and deliverables.
- Assume leadership responsibilities as a contributing member of multidisciplinary clinical trial teams.
- Communicate proactively with project stakeholders to ensure timely delivery and alignment on project objectives.
- Manage and document assignments to meet project timelines while maintaining high-quality standards and compliance with contractual obligations.
Programming and Data Management
- Independently create, execute, maintain, and validate programs that:
- Transfer data across multiple data management systems and operating systems.
- Integrate data from diverse sources and structures.
- Generate and maintain summary datasets.
- Produce reports and outputs from multiple databases.
- Generate and validate listings, tables, and figures using SAS and other standard programming tools.
- Ensure accuracy, consistency, and quality of all programming deliverables.
Technical Expertise and Problem Solving
- Apply advanced programming and analytical skills to address complex clinical and bioinformatics challenges.
- Support data analysis and reporting activities across multiple studies.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of innovative programming solutions and best practices.
Mentorship and Team Development
- Provide training, guidance, and mentorship to junior programmers and team members.
- Support knowledge sharing and skill development within the department.
- Conduct quality control reviews of statistical programming deliverables.
- Assist in capturing and reporting biostatistical and project-related metrics.
Departmental and Business Contributions
- Support departmental infrastructure and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Represent the organization at industry conferences, professional meetings, and training events.
- Assist in developing training materials, departmental procedures, working practice documents, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Contribute to proposal development and the bid support process when required.
Education and Experience Requirements
Required Education
- Master's degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Biostatistics, Mathematics, or a related field with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience; OR
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Biostatistics, Mathematics, or a related field (or equivalent qualification) with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
Required Experience
- Experience in statistical programming, bioinformatics programming, clinical data analysis, or a related field.
- Demonstrated ability to independently manage programming activities and deliverables for clinical research projects.
- Experience leading programming activities or supporting project teams in a clinical research environment is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong proficiency in one or more programming languages, with SAS experience preferred.
- Strong understanding of relational database structures and complex data systems.
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Advanced analytical, problem-solving, and innovative thinking skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including proficiency in English.
- Ability to independently manage multiple assignments and competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong organizational and project management skills.
- Demonstrated leadership, initiative, and motivation.
- Ability to effectively mentor, train, and develop team members.
- Experience performing quality control reviews of programming deliverables.
- Ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities and project requirements.
Working Conditions
- Work is primarily performed in an office environment with exposure to standard office equipment.
- Occasional travel may be required, including domestic and international travel.
- Periodic visits to client or site locations may be necessary.
