State and Local Tax Lead

This role sits at the intersection of tax strategy, technology, and cross-functional business partnership, driving how a fast-scaling technology organization manages complex U.S. state and local tax obligations. You will lead end-to-end SALT strategy, compliance, and audit defense across multiple tax domains, including income, sales and use, gross receipts, property, and telecom-related taxes. The position plays a critical role in ensuring accurate tax treatment across products, contracts, and transactions as the business continues to expand into new markets. You will collaborate closely with Finance, Legal, Revenue, Product, and Engineering teams to embed tax logic into systems and product workflows. A strong focus of the role is driving automation and AI-enabled improvements to enhance tax accuracy and efficiency. This is a highly visible leadership position where your expertise will directly influence financial integrity, compliance, and operational scalability. You will also mentor and develop a growing tax team in a fast-paced, innovation-driven environment.
Accountabilities:
- Lead U.S. state and local tax strategy, compliance, and audit defense across income, sales and use, gross receipts, property, and telecom tax areas.
- Partner with Product, Engineering, Finance, Legal, and Revenue teams to ensure accurate tax configuration for new and existing products.
- Oversee taxability assessments for SaaS offerings, VoIP, and other evolving product structures across jurisdictions.
- Drive automation and AI-enabled initiatives to improve tax compliance, validation, research, and exemption processes.
- Advise internal stakeholders on tax implications related to contracts, pricing models, and new product launches.
- Manage SALT audits and support resolution of complex tax matters across multiple jurisdictions.
- Collaborate on tax technology systems and ERP platforms to ensure accurate transaction-level reporting and system enhancements.
- Mentor and develop tax team members while fostering a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence.
- 15+ years of progressive experience in state and local tax, including exposure to telecom, SaaS, or technology industries.
- Deep expertise in U.S. SALT compliance, audit management, and multi-jurisdictional tax strategy.
- Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP and accounting standards such as ASC 450 and ASC 740.
- Experience working with tax, billing, ERP, and compliance systems (e.g., Oracle, Zuora, Avalara, ServiceNow, or similar platforms).
- Proven ability to lead cross-functional initiatives involving Finance, Legal, Product, and Engineering teams.
- Strong leadership experience, including mentoring or managing tax professionals.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate complex tax concepts for non-technical stakeholders and executives.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or JD strongly preferred.
- Competitive total compensation package ranging from $150,800 to $329,900 USD, depending on experience and location.
