Sterile Processing Technician

The sterile processing technician is responsible for the decontamination, cleaning, packaging, disinfection, and sterilization of medical and surgical equipment, instruments, and supplies. Service delivery is consistent with ANSI/AAMI, APIC, AORN, and CMS guidelines, rules, and regulations. Professional accountability enriches the sterile processing technician’s engagement in promoting an inter-professional culture of collaborative decision-making, innovation, life-long learning, and teamwork. RESPONSIBILITIES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS):

  • Collecting used and contaminated equipment, instruments, and supplies for sorting and decontamination.
  • Manually cleaning of contaminated equipment and instruments.
  • Operating and maintaining decontamination and sterilization equipment.
  • Inspecting instruments and equipment for meticulous cleaning and proper functioning.
  • Sorting, preparing, and packaging instruments for sterilization.
  • Monitoring and operating sterilization equipment.
  • Troubleshooting equipment and promptly reporting any issues or problems with equipment.
  • Ensures operation of equipment by verifying daily testing and recommended preventive maintenance requirements are completed; calling for repairs; and evaluating new equipment and techniques.
  • Preparing and delivering equipment and instruments for to the proper storage area.
  • Maintaining records of testing, cleaning, and sterilization procedures.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge through continuing education opportunities including internal and external educational offerings.
  • Maintains a cooperative relationship among health care teams by communicating information and participating in team problem-solving methods.
  • Regular attendance and punctuality for scheduled shifts.
  • Must adhere to safety protocols at all times.
  • Per DRH policy, all required conditions of employment must be met and maintained including required vaccinations.
  • Implement DRH Standards of Behavior and exhibit behaviors consistent with DRH core values.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
