Sterile Processing Technician
Your work helps ensure Veterans receive safe surgical care by keeping surgical instruments and reusable medical equipment (RME) safe, sterile, and ready for patient care. As a Sterile Processing Technician, you'll support the complete reprocessing cycle while maintaining the highest standards of quality, safety, and infection prevention.
This position is contingent upon contract award.
Schedule: Monday–Friday schedules available across multiple shifts.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform the complete reprocessing cycle for surgical instruments and RME, including decontamination, inspection, assembly, sterilization, storage, and distribution.
- Operate steam sterilization and high-level disinfection equipment while following manufacturer Instructions for Use (IFU) and established sterilization standards.
- Process flexible endoscopes and other RME using approved reprocessing methods.
- Inspect instruments for cleanliness, functionality, completeness, and damage, removing defective items from service.
- Assemble surgical trays and instrument sets supporting multiple specialties, including General Surgery, Orthopedics, ENT, Urology, Vascular, Dental, Gynecology, Robotics, and Podiatry.
- Perform and document biological, chemical, and Bowie-Dick testing to verify sterilization effectiveness.
- Utilize Censitrac or comparable instrument tracking software throughout the reprocessing cycle.
- Maintain compliance with infection prevention practices, OSHA requirements, PPE standards, and sterilization quality assurance protocols.
- Maintain proper storage and distribution of sterile instruments and supplies while adhering to aseptic technique.
Required
Meet ONE of the following qualification pathways:
- Current CRCST (HSPA) certification
- Graduate of a recognized Sterile Processing program with 2+ years of SPS experience
- VA Level I certification (or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire) with 2+ years of SPS experience
- 5+ years of verifiable hands-on Sterile Processing experience
Required technical experience:
- Instrument decontamination, inspection, assembly, sterilization, storage, and distribution
- Steam sterilization and high-level disinfection (HLD)
- Biological, chemical, and Bowie-Dick testing
- Flexible endoscope reprocessing
- Processing instrumentation for multiple surgical specialties
- Censitrac or a comparable instrument tracking system
Additional requirements:
- Exceptional attention to detail when cleaning, inspecting, assembling, documenting, and preparing reusable surgical instruments
- Working knowledge of microbiology, sterilization principles, infection prevention, OSHA standards, and PPE requirements
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities and work assignments
- Ability to lift equipment, push carts, stand for extended periods, and work safely in warm, humid processing environments while wearing required PPE
- Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English
- Valid driver's license
- Ability to complete all required credentialing, health screening, and onboarding requirements
Preferred
- Recent acute care hospital Sterile Processing Department (SPD) experience
- Experience processing flexible endoscopes
- Experience with multiple sterilization technologies and reusable medical equipment reprocessing
