Structural Engineer - Rail
Saudi Arabian Railways (SAR) is seeking a Structural Engineer specialising in rail infrastructure to provide technical leadership, engineering judgement, and assurance across complex railway projects.
This is a professional role, suited to an engineer with deep expertise in railway structures (bridges, stations, tunnels, depots) who can operate confidently in a multidisciplinary rail environment, engaging with designers, contractors, clients, and regulators.
You will work Client-side and contribute to projects from concept through delivery, ensuring structural solutions are safe, robust, compliant, and aligned with whole‑life railway performance.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Engineering Judgement
- Lead and review the structural engineering aspects of railway infrastructure, including bridges, viaducts, tunnels, stations, yards, and ancillary railway buildings
- Provide authoritative engineering judgement on structural design acceptability, constructability, durability, and long‑term performance
- Challenge non‑compliant or high‑risk design solutions and propose technically sound alternatives
Design Review & Assurance
- Develop, review, and endorse structural design deliverables at key project stages (concept, preliminary, detailed design)
- Perform and check complex structural analyses and calculations, using appropriate analytical and finite‑element tools
- Ensure alignment with railway‑specific standards and best practice, not just generic civil codes
Multidisciplinary Integration
- Work closely with track, systems, electrical, geotechnical, hydrology, and architectural disciplines to ensure integrated, buildable solutions
- Identify and resolve interface risks between structural works and wider railway systems
Site & Construction Support
- Provide engineering input to non‑conformance resolution, technical queries, and change assessments
Governance, Risk & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with applicable Saudi Arabian standards, international rail standards (e.g. AREMA, EN/Eurocodes where applicable), and project‑specific requirements
- Support engineering risk identification, mitigation, and resolution
- Contribute to technical interfaces with authorities, clients, and independent reviewers
Mentorship & Knowledge Transfer
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior and mid‑level engineers
- Promote good engineering practice, professionalism, and safety‑led decision‑making
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering
- Professional Engineer (PE), Chartered Engineer (CEng), Saudi Council of Engineers (SCE) or equivalent recognised professional registration
- 15+ years of experience in structural engineering, with significant rail infrastructure experience
- Strong background in the design of railway bridges, stations, tunnels, or depots
- Proven capability in structural analysis
- Demonstrated ability to work within multidisciplinary rail project teams
- Fluency in English
Technical Skills
- Advanced proficiency in structural design tools and software (e.g. AutoCAD, Revit, relevant analysis software such as Midas, LUSAS, SAP2000 and ETABS)
- Strong working knowledge of rail‑specific structural design standards and codes
- Sound understanding of construction methods for railway structures in complex environments
Professional Attributes
- High level of technical integrity and engineering judgement
- Ability to challenge constructively and communicate complex technical issues clearly
- Comfortable operating in a senior role interfacing with clients, contractors, and regulators
- Strong safety culture and attention to whole‑life asset performance
Desirable
- Experience in owner‑side, consultant, or independent assurance roles
- Exposure to large‑scale or strategic rail programmes
- Experience working in the Middle East or similar international project environments
- Fluency in Arabic
