Studio Artist - Madame Tussauds Amsterdam (M/F/X)

The Studio Artist is responsible for maintaining, restoring, and enhancing wax figures, costumes, wigs, props, and themed environments to Madame Tussauds' world-class standards. The role combines artistic skill, technical expertise, and attention to detail to ensure every figure and attraction area remains guest-ready and reflects the premium quality associated with the Madame Tussauds brand.

Figure Maintenance & Restoration

  • Conduct regular inspections of wax figures to identify wear, damage, or deterioration.
  • Repair, restore, and maintain wax figures using approved artistic and technical techniques.
  • Retouch facial features, skin tones, makeup, hairlines, and other fine details.
  • Repair cracks, dents, scratches, discoloration, and other cosmetic imperfections.
  • Maintain realistic appearance and likeness standards for all figures.Hair, Costume & Prop Maintenance
  • Style, clean, repair, and replace wigs, hairpieces, eyelashes, and facial hair as required.
  • Coordinate costume care, including repairs, steaming, fitting, and replacement recommendations.
  • Maintain and repair accessories, props, furniture, and scenic elements.
  • Ensure all wardrobe and prop elements remain consistent with brand and character specifications.

Artistic Production

  • Assist in creating scenic elements, displays, set dressing, and themed environments.
  • Support installation and de-installation of new figures, exhibitions, and seasonal experiences.
  • Participate in artistic projects requiring painting, sculpting, mould-making, finishing, and fabrication techniques.
  • Contribute creative solutions to enhance attraction presentation and guest experience.

Quality Standards

  • Ensure all figures meet Madame Tussauds global quality standards.
  • Complete scheduled maintenance programs and quality audits.
  • Identify opportunities for proactive maintenance to prevent deterioration.
  • Maintain detailed records of treatments, repairs, and restoration activities.

Health & Safety

  • Operate tools, equipment, and materials safely and responsibly.
  • Comply with Merlin Entertainments health, safety, environmental, and risk management procedures.
  • Maintain clean, organised, and safe workshop and storage areas.
  • Handle chemicals, paints, solvents, and specialist materials in accordance with safety guidelines.

  • Support behind-the-scenes tours, media opportunities, and special events when required.

  • Advanced artistic skills in painting, sculpting, restoration, or model making.
  • Strong understanding of colour theory, texture, anatomy, and realistic finishes.
  • Experience working with artistic materials and specialist tools.

Kwalificaties en ervaring

  • Takes pride in delivering exceptional quality.
  • Relevant experience in the art sector: fashion / theatre / costuming and/or hair.
  • Knowledge about costuming, fabrics and materials
  • Understanding of colour, make-up and hair styles
  • Great time management skills
  • Eye for detail
  • Ability to lift, push or pull 20-35 kg.
  • Sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
  • Act as ambassador for Madame Tussauds brand at celebrity PR events and colour checks as required.
  • Ability to work in a small team: being a team player is a must!

Desirable

  • Experience working with wax figures, mannequins, prosthetics, museum collections, special effects, themed entertainment, theatre, or visitor attractions.
  • Knowledge of conservation and preservation practices.
  • Experience with mould-making, sculpting, airbrushing, or scenic art.
  • Familiarity with health and safety procedures within workshop environments.
