Job Details
Fife Nature Records Centre is the Local Environmental Records Centre for the area, providing a quality wildlife information and data resource. We collate and share biodiversity information for a variety of purposes, including informing decision-making, guiding conservation work and contributing to research. This role offers an opportunity to assist and support the Fife Nature Records Centre Information Officer in this work and gain experience in the sector.

Core duties include collating, validating and entering biological records into the Recorder 6 database. The role also involves using a range of other tools, including Record Cleaner, Excel, ArcGIS and R, as well as accessing records from online platforms such as iRecord and the NBN Atlas.

The role will involve interacting with people with a wide range of recording experience – from beginners submitting records to expert recorders who verify them.

Fife Nature Records Centre has recently joined other nature posts moving into the Climate, Nature and Sustainability team in the Planning, Climate and Sustainability Service, recognising Fife Council’s commitment to tackling the biodiversity crisis. This role provides an excellent opportunity to work with others and contribute to meaningful work supporting nature and biodiversity in Fife.

Based at Fife House, Glenrothes but with a blended workstyle. Working 21 hours, 36 minutes per week (0.6 FTE) on a temporary, part time basis with a salary of £25,604.23 to £26,786.83 pro rata (grade FC03). Temporary to 31st March 2027.

As a progressive employer, we offer the opportunity to work in this role as a “blended working” arrangement with home-working opportunities and occasional office-working as required. While the significant part of the role can and will be carried out remotely, candidates should be able to travel to and attend office locations in Fife as required. Office working is typically on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays.
The Person

We’re looking for someone who is:

  • An experienced and confident user of computers and IT applications. Experience of Recorder 6, Record Cleaner, Excel, ArcGIS and R, and of online platforms such as iRecord and the NBN Atlas would be an advantage, but training can be provided. A willingness and ability to learn new systems is welcomed.

  • Comfortable communicating with others, with interpersonal skills to help maintain and build relationships with recorders and partners.

  • Able to deliver a consistent and reliable service, with customer care skills and the ability to handle enquiries, including via email and telephone.

  • Accurate, with attention to detail, supporting the maintenance and growth of the wildlife information resource.

  • Comfortable working with numbers. Experience of data handling, particularly biological data, would be an advantage.

  • Able to use organisational and time management skills to manage your workload and the data we hold, with a methodical approach to work.

  • Proactive in problem solving.

  • Experienced in maintaining confidentiality, relevant to a range of information, including sensitive wildlife records.

  • Essential qualifications for this post are National 4, SVQ, or 3 Standard Grades or equivalent.
