Surveyor of Distinction

Scope

The Surveyor of Distinction is a recognized technical expert, both inside and outside of the firm. The position focuses on the strategic implementation of team initiatives that center around technical expertise, survey data integrity and quality assurance. While the main focus is not on clients, the person fulfilling this position has great influence on our delivered product and the reputation that is formed in our client’s eyes with respect to our quality, innovation, and technical expertise.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Provide expert guidance to Team members of their discipline to meet the technical surveying, boundary and geospatial needs for projects
  • Serves as a technical resource for resolving complex boundary resolutions, geodetic issues and difficult field conditions; Must be able to visit project sites and resolve technical issues with very little assistance from other senior staff
  • Participate in promotional activities that establish IMEG as a technical expert, including items such as speaking at conferences, participation on national technical boards, writing articles and whitepapers
  • Makes major surveying recommendations and decisions regarding methods of practice, equipment utilization and legal boundary interpretation with little input from senior staff
  • Plans survey execution strategies for all project sizes and assigns technical duties to staff working on projects (e.g., determining control networks, LiDAR vs. conventional methods)
  • Reviews correspondence, legal descriptions, cutsheets and surveyor reports prepared by junior staff to ensure legal and technical accuracy.
  • Actively leads in quality control process for Team projects, specifically regarding boundary determination, topographic datasets, construction layout reports and data precision.
  • Contributes to leadership in some aspect of our Technical Operations Team for both large and small projects, driving adoption of current IMEG standard processes and new technologies.
  • Acts as an internal advisor, analyzes technical problems and writes detailed surveyor reports for high-liability projects.
  • Plays a significant role in project reviews for quality control for large complex projects

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Mastery of surveying techniques, boundary law principles, geodesy, equipment and surveying tools, and concepts involved in the production of plats, ALTA/NSPS Surveys, construction stakeout documents and technical reports.
  • Expert level mastery of technical and analytical skills; demonstrated aptitude to lead survey calculation and mapping efforts for large and highly technical projects.
  • Strong training, mentoring and leadership skills with the ability to transfer historical and technical knowledge to the next generation of surveyors.
  • Ability to mentor, motivate, and lead others in technical excellence
  • Ability to perform final quality control check in their area of expertise
  • Ability to develop client relationships through technical trust and expert consultation.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; Ability to clearly communicate in both oral and written communication to individuals or groups
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • Eagerness to adapt to new challenges and emerging geospatial technologies.
  • Expert in industry-standard software (e.g., AutoCAD Civil 3d, Trimble Business Center, Leica Infinity, or similar processing tools)
  • Proficient in Microsoft and MS Office Suite including but not limited to Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Ability to travel up to 25% with occasional overnight stays

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Civil Engineering, or equivalent required
  • Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) License required; Multi-state licensure preferred
  • 25 years of experience minimum required, 30 preferred, in the land surveying engineering consulting industry

Physical Requirements

  • Regularly required to sit, walk, stand, talk, see, hear, and lift objects up to 25 pounds
  • Occasionally required to drive, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, reach with hands or arms, and grasp or pull
  • Will have limited exposure to outside weather conditions and loud noises
