Swim Instructor

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Swim Instructor, under the supervision of the Aquatics Director, provides safe, motivational and knowledgeable instruction to members & program participants. The instructor is responsible for the safety and proper instruction of class participants. Lessons are conducted in the afternoons and evenings, and regular morning weekend work on Saturdays is a required part of the role.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Never take your eyes off your class. Never leave your children unattended. Safety is your highest priority.
  • Provide safe, competent aquatic instruction using nationally recognized guidelines established by the YMCA of the USA.
  • Be alert/attentive so as to prevent accidents. Respond quickly, intelligently, and decisively and in accordance with YMCA established emergency and accident management procedures.
  • Teach with encouragement and positive reinforcement.
  • Must have considerable ability as a swimmer.
  • Maintain constant surveillance of class participants to ensure a safe and positive environment.
  • Enforce all pool rules in a consistent, courteous and fair manner. Educate family users of the purpose and need for the rules as a professional.
  • Instructors must set up for their classes and return equipment afterwards.
  • Maintain and attendance and skill accomplishment records for class participants.
  • Attend all in-service training programs and staff meetings as scheduled by the director.
