Tax Analyst
The Tax Analyst is a critical role responsible for executing recurring, process-driven indirect tax compliance activities that keep Billtrust operating accurately and on time across U.S. and international jurisdictions. You will leverage AI tools and co-worker agents to surface filing discrepancies, accelerate reconciliation workflows, and prepare supporting data—focusing your expertise on exception management, regulatory judgment, and the quality oversight that compliance demands.
Reporting to the Director of Tax, you’ll own end-to-end tracking of Avalara-processed sales and use tax filings, gross receipts, submissions, business license renewals, and FBAR preparation. Your attention to detail and process discipline directly supports Billtrust’s financial integrity and regulatory standing across a complex, multi-jurisdiction footprint.
What You'll Do
Indirect Tax Compliance & Filing Oversight
- Monitor U.S. state and local sales/use tax filings processed through Avalara, including status tracking and exception management.
- Review Avalara reports to confirm filings are completed accurately and on time; reconcile sales tax payable liability accounts to maintain audit-ready records.
- Leverage AI tools to accelerate review of Avalara output, flagging anomalies for your judgment and escalation decisions.
- Investigate, document, and escalate filing errors, notices, or discrepancies to the Director of Tax with clear supporting documentation.
- Assist with gross receipts tax filings and maintain related compliance tracking.
- Other duties as assigned.
Payments, Licensing & Reporting
- Facilitate and organize state and local tax payments, including making payments directly on jurisdiction websites and coordinating physical check requests with the accounts payable team.
- Manage annual state and local business license renewals from end to end, including data gathering, submission support, and deadline tracking.
- Support FBAR (FinCEN Form 114) preparation, including data compilation and reconciliation to ensure accurate reporting.
- Provide third-party consultants with relevant VAT data to facilitate timely filing of returns.
Provision Support & Process Integrity
- Support quarterly and annual tax provision calculations, including book-tax differences and valuation allowance analysis.
- Maintain organized workpapers, compliance trackers, and filing calendars that support the broader tax team’s workflows.
- Follow documented procedures and proactively communicate issues; identify opportunities to improve compliance tracking through process discipline and available tools.
Experience & Technical Background:
- 5+ years of experience in tax compliance, accounting, or a related finance function.
- Working knowledge of indirect tax concepts, including U.S. sales and use tax, gross receipts tax, or FBAR reporting.
- Experience with tax compliance software; familiarity with Avalara or similar automated filing platforms is strongly preferred.
- Strong attention to detail and comfort managing recurring, process-driven workflows with accuracy and accountability.
- Comfort using AI tools (e.g., Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot) to accelerate daily work, or a genuine
- willingness to learn and build those habits.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft 365 for data tracking, reconciliation, and documentation.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with FBAR preparation or multi-jurisdictional tax compliance.
- Familiarity with tax provision support, including book-tax difference calculations or valuation allowance analysis.
- Exposure to AI-augmented finance or compliance workflows in a professional setting.
- Associate or bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field.
