About the role
We are looking for a Tech Lead - Trade to join our Technology team in Sydney.
Trading sits at the heart of the Stake experience. Every order, portfolio update, price movement and market interaction relies on systems that customers trust to perform when it matters most. The Trade squad owns some of the most critical experiences across the platform, helping customers confidently participate in the markets while ensuring reliability, performance and simplicity at scale.
As Tech Lead, you'll lead the engineering team responsible for Stake's core trading experience. You'll be accountable for both delivery and long-term technical excellence, guiding the architecture, operational maturity and engineering culture that underpin one of the most important parts of the business. When a customer places a trade, your team owns the experience end to end.
You'll be a key member of Technology's leadership group, working closely with Product, Design, Operations, Risk and Compliance leaders to solve complex problems and deliver exceptional customer outcomes. This is a role with significant influence across engineering strategy, product direction and team development. We work hybrid spending 3 days in our beautiful, dog-friendly Sydney office.
What success looks like
Within your first two years, you'll have:
- Built and developed a high-performing engineering team that consistently delivers reliable, high-quality outcomes across the trading experience
- Strengthened the scalability, resilience and operational maturity of Stake's trading platform, improving reliability during periods of high customer activity and market volatility
- Delivered meaningful improvements across key customer journeys including trading, portfolio management, pricing, charting and market engagement experiences
- Embedded strong ownership and operational excellence across the team through effective incident management, service ownership and continuous improvement practices
- Guided key architectural decisions that improve performance, maintainability and long-term platform scalability
- Built trusted partnerships across Product, Design, Operations, Risk and Compliance to balance customer experience, risk management and delivery velocity
- Elevated engineering standards through mentoring, coaching and thoughtful technical leadership
- Played a key role in shaping Stake's broader technology strategy and helping build a culture of accountability, ownership and continuous improvement

- You have strong commercial awareness and consistently make decisions that support broader business goals
- You communicate clearly, build trust quickly and create environments where people can do their best work
Bonus if you've ever
- Built or scaled trading, investing, brokerage or other real-time financial products
- Worked on high-availability systems where uptime, latency and customer trust are critical
- Led large-scale migrations, architectural modernisation initiatives or platform reliability programs
- Worked closely with risk, compliance and operational teams in regulated industries
- Been an active investor and have a strong understanding of customer expectations within investing products
