Technical Director – HV Cable Engineering
As a Technical Director – HV Cable Engineering, you will act as a recognised Subject Matter Expert (SME) for HV/EHV cable systems across complex Transmission & Distribution programmes.
This role requires a CDAE qualification and carries accountability for technical authority, assurance, and strategic leadership across cable engineering.
You will:
- Act as the technical authority / SME for HV and EHV cable systems (HVAC & HVDC) across onshore and offshore projects.
- Provide strategic technical leadership and governance across multi‑disciplinary delivery teams, ensuring engineering solutions meet client, contractual, statutory, and regulatory requirements.
- Lead technical assurance activities, including design reviews, peer reviews, technical approvals, and independent checking of HV cable system designs.
- Own and drive technical risk management, ensuring early identification, clear communication, and effective mitigation of cable‑related risks.
- Define and oversee HV cable system design philosophies, including ratings, installation methods, bonding systems, earthing, and system integration.
- Ensure compliance with IEC cable standards, CIGRE technical guidance, and utility specifications, embedding best practice across delivery.
- Support work‑winning and bid activities, providing senior technical input into proposals, specifications, technical clarifications, and client presentations.
- Build and maintain senior client relationships, acting as a trusted technical advisor to utilities, asset owners, and project sponsors.
- Provide technical oversight and coordination of subcontractors, suppliers, and remote delivery teams where required.
- Represent WSP in industry forums and working groups (e.g. CIGRE, IEEE), strengthening WSP’s technical credibility and external profile.
- Mentor senior engineers and technical leads, contributing to capability development, succession planning, and technical excellence across the business.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS (MANDATORY)
- CDAE – Certified Design Authority Engineer
(This is a mandatory requirement for the role.) - Degree in Electrical / Power Engineering or an equivalent technical discipline.
- Extensive experience in HV/EHV cable engineering, covering design, manufacture, testing, installation, and commissioning.
- Strong expertise in HVAC and HVDC cable systems, including both onshore and offshore applications.
- Proven experience acting as a technical authority / SME, providing governance and assurance on complex T&D projects.
- In‑depth knowledge of IEC cable standards, CIGRE publications, and utility technical specifications.
- Demonstrable experience in cable system design and ratings, including use of tools such as CYMCAP or equivalent.
- Strong understanding of bonding systems, earthing, short‑circuit calculations, cable layouts, and system integration.
- Experience witnessing and advising on third‑party cable activities, including factory acceptance testing, transport, installation, and site execution.
- Ability to engage confidently with senior client stakeholders, asset managers, and project directors.
DESIRABLE
- Chartered Engineer status (or working towards).
- Experience providing technical leadership on major utility frameworks or large infrastructure programmes.
- Track record of supporting bid and proposal activities at senior technical level.
- Active involvement in industry technical committees or working groups.
