Technical Manager - Retail E&E

Acts as a lead within the COU business segment(s)/region to promote consistency and operational excellence by assisting the Director with more regionally focused work and/or supporting a team of Engineering Managers. Responsible for P/L activities, budget development, leading & driving initiatives, marketing campaigns, development of tools, and driving process efficiencies to grow business segments. Leads and executes operational strategy across the COU segment(s)/region to drive growth and financial results while ensuring customer satisfaction within a highly matrixed organization. Assures that their teams, as well as the teams managed by other People Managers within the COU, meet overall financial targets (revenue, profit, enterprise value, etc.) while ensuring quality and customer satisfaction. Has a deep knowledge of the strategies, needs of the customer, and competition,
in order to provide the right services; partners with BU/COU leadership to build and to successfully align resources. Responsible for identifying opportunities to grow the business across the region by working with customers to understand the market and identify new ways to generate profitable revenue by supporting new and innovative products and encouraging team to do the same. Responsible for leading a high-performance culture by managing the performance, development, and engagement of team leaders and team members and assuring alignment with the overall strategy of the Business and the Enterprise. Responsible for leading and collaborating with multi-functional teams to drive initiatives to provide broader service offerings. Partners with Lab, Sales, Business Development, Product Management, and other functions to achieve financial goals, growth, understand areas of development and process improvements.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supports Technical Services leadership in defining the interpretation, application and uniformity of technical methods, techniques and requirements applied in testing, audits and/or inspections.
  • Responsible for the implementation of technical interpretation, application, training and uniformity of technical methods, techniques, and requirements in assigned geography and/or Industry. Develops guidelines, procedures and programs for internal operational adherence.
  • Partner with Quality and Operations functions to drive laboratory/field consistency. Contributes to the development of processes and procedures required to achieve and maintain necessary accreditations and certifications with accreditation bodies and notification authorities.
  • Supports strategic selling opportunities by leveraging industry relationships and providing technical expertise and advice during the sales process.
  • Represents UL at meetings of outside organizations; providing expert advice to influence industry approaches and elevate ULs thought leadership in the market.
  • Conducts webinars, presentations, technical trainings and workshops in region for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Leads special projects related to laboratory/field alignment, continuous improvement, as well as process and service innovation.
  • May manage the performance of direct reports by defining accountabilities, establishing performance objectives and goals, providing feedback and guidelines and ensuring that all policies are understood and adhered to.
  • Support and provide feedback to alignment initiatives for Technical Services.
  • Read and follow the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct and follow all physical and digital security practices.
  • Performs other duties as directed.
  • University degree (equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree) in Business Administration, Management, Engineering, or related field plus at least ten years directly related experience, including eight years of relevant management/leadership experience.
  • Solid experience as lead or participant in cross-functional or global projects or worked in multiple functions or regions.
  • Lean Sigma Green Belt or Lean Leadership Training, Gage R&R experience or equivalent preferred.
