Individual contributors who provide support services to complete technical, production, or trade-level activities. Technical work is typically performed in a “hands on” environment and focuses on daily plant operations, such as system operations and maintenance. May provide direction to less experienced staff, but do not have formal team management responsibilities. Typically requires some form of certification, apprenticeship, or degree.

This job family is responsible for production activities in a manufacturing or field site environment to optimize resource use, minimize costs, and maintain quality standards. Activities include planning, managing, and reviewing production operations to achieve output and quality objectives; undertaking production activities to transform tangible inputs (e.g., raw materials or semi-finished goods) or intangible inputs (e.g., ideas, information, know how) into finished products or services; developing and implementing production schedules to ensure the effective use of labor, tools, plant, and equipment; operating, monitoring, and maintaining machines and production equipment; and skilled trades and lower-level apprentice craft work.

Positions in this sub-family are responsible for managing and overseeing work across multiple areas of manufacturing including: general production manufacturing work; assembling finished components or parts into finished products; process manufacturing batches of bulk materials/ingredients including mechanical processing (e.g., mixing, grinding, separating, filtering, etc.) and chemical processing (altering the chemical properties of materials through chemical reactions and changing temperature, pressure, etc.); setting up and operating machine tools to convert materials into parts, sub-assemblies, and assemblies; surface finishing of parts, components, and assembled items including washing/painting/plating/anti-corrosion coating, hardening, polishing/engraving/etching, etc.; and packaging materials or finished goods into containers for the purpose of protection, display, and handling.

Overview: Individual contributor that requires advanced knowledge of operational procedures and tools obtained through many years of work experience and vocational or technical education.

Purpose: Delivers on day-to-day objectives. May contribute to projects through the provision of technical expertise.

Qualifications/ Experience: Work requires advanced knowledge of the job, including the practical application of specialized methods and techniques. This knowldege is typically aquired through (1) a secondary school qualification (a HS diploma, G.E.D., etc. in the US) or basic vocational/technical education in related discipline and (2) a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.

Problem Solving: Tasks and problems are sometimes routine and have moderately complicated solutions.

Management & Supervision: May provide guidance, coaching, and training to other employees within the job area. Works under moderate or limited supervision.
