Job Description Summary

To ensure the readiness and functionality of Defence Training Areas. This role involves coordinating tasks with Associated Contractors, maintaining and repairing target equipment, and ensuring the safety and accessibility of Range Live Fire areas. The TAR Operator is responsible for the planning and execution of target placement based on Defence Unit requirements, conducting necessary inspections and audits, and managing consumable supplies. They must also possess the skills to operate various target systems and handle off-road driving and minor repairs, ensuring the training environment is fit for use at all times.

About the Role

  • Coordination: Co-ordinating Associated Contractor tasks applicable to the TAR (e.g. Land Management, Housekeeping, Cleaning, Resource Recovery and Waste Management, Estate Works and Estate Upkeep)

  • Planning: Following consultation with Defence User Units, plan, place, test and recover Range Live Fire Target Equipment in advance of specified Unit requirements

  • Safety: Opening / closing all TAR danger area gates / flags as determined by planned and approved live firing events schedules

  • Maintenance: Building or repairing targets through Defence supply arrangements, using consumables supplied by Defence and maintaining sufficient consumable stock levels

  • Inspections: Conducting Non-Technical Inspections of all Range Live Fire Target Equipment and assist Associated Contractors with technical inspections as required

  • Audits: Conducting Government Furnished Equipment / Government Furnished Facility audits, surveys and inspections as required under the Contract

  • Readiness: Ensuring Defence TAR are in a state that is fit for subsequent use, including but not limited to weed management in and around target areas and facility maintenance requirements

  • Operation: Possessing skills or have the ability to quickly acquire the skills to operate Drop Automatic Retaliatory Target (DART), Marksmanship Training Range (MTR), Static Mechanical Range (SMR) and new targets and target systems introduced into service

  • Inventory: Possess experience in inventory control, stock management and storage maintenance

  • Chainsaws: Confidently use chain saws and performing minor corrective works to elements such as TAR signage and repair of boundary fences as required

  • Vehicles: Competently operate vehicles for off road driving in difficult terrain including, engaging in other tasks such as the recovery of vehicles (winch operation and ancillary recovery equipment)
