Position Description
The Barrick Africa & Middle East Team are seeking to recruit an UG Automation & Electrification Specialist – AME & LATAM.
The UG Automation & Electrification Specialist is the regional lead responsible for Underground automation, digital mining technologies, OT systems, BEV integration, and future Underground technology deployment across Barrick AME operations.
The role drives the regional automation, electrification, and digitalisation roadmap for Underground HME operations, ensuring technologies are operationally integrated, supportable, secure, and aligned with Barrick business objectives.
The role provides leadership for:
- Underground automation systems
- Telemetry systems
- OT infrastructure
- Autonomous equipment technologies
- Remote operation systems
- Electrification technologies
- Digital mining initiatives
The role works closely with the UG Electrical Specialist; UG Systems Specialist; UG Asset Health Specialist; Engineering teams; and OEMs and technology vendors.
The role acts as the regional technical authority for Underground automation, electrification, and digital mining technologies.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Develop and drive the Underground automation, electrification, and digital mining roadmap across AME operations.
- Lead implementation and support of:
- Autonomous mining systems
- Telemetry systems
- Remote operation technologies
- Machine guidance systems
- OT infrastructure
- Electrification technologies
- Digital mining platforms
- Govern Underground OT systems including:
- SCADA systems
- PLC systems
- Telemetry infrastructure
- OT communications
- Automation interfaces
- Edge-device integration
- Support implementation and operational integration of BEV and Underground electrification technologies.
- Provide technical leadership for Underground digitalisation and technology transformation initiatives.
- Ensure automation and OT systems align with:
- Barrick OT standards
- Cybersecurity requirements
- Operational requirements
- Maintenance strategies
- Underground mining requirements
- Support integration of automation and telemetry data into maintenance and reporting systems.
- Collaborate with the Asset Health and Systems functions to support:
- Predictive maintenance
- Reliability improvement
- Operational analytics
- Performance reporting
- Provide technical support and troubleshooting for complex automation and OT system failures.
- Support evaluation and deployment of new Underground technologies and OEM systems.
- Manage and coordinate automation and technology vendors across Underground operations.
- Drive standardisation of Underground automation and telemetry architecture across AME operations.
- Support operational readiness and commissioning activities for new Underground projects and technology deployments.
- Develop regional OT and automation capability through training and mentoring programmes.
- Monitor automation system performance, uptime, and technology adoption across Underground sites.
- Support long-term Underground electrification and digital mining strategies across the AME region.
- Ensure all automation and electrification activities comply with:
- Barrick standards
- OT governance requirements
- Cybersecurity standards
- Electrical safety requirements
- Local statutory requirements
Qualification Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Mechatronics, Automation Engineering, Mining Engineering, or related field preferred.
- Desirable: Formal qualification or certification in:
- OT networks.
- SCADA systems.
- PLC systems.
- Industrial automation.
- Telemetry systems.
- Professional registration with a relevant engineering body is beneficial.
- Project management certification is advantageous.
Experience and Skills Requirements
- Minimum 8–10 years’ experience in automation, electrification, OT systems, or digital mining technologies within large-scale underground mining operations.
- Multi-site or regional support experience is strongly preferred.
- Proven hands-on experience implementing and supporting underground mining automation systems.
- Experience with:
- Autonomous loading systems.
- Autonomous tramming systems.
- Remote operation technologies.
- Machine telemetry systems.
- OT infrastructure.
- Electrification technologies.
- Demonstrated experience developing and driving automation and electrification roadmaps and projects within mining operations.
- Demonstrated experience managing automation and electrification projects from concept through implementation and operational support.
- Demonstrated experience integrating automation and telemetry data into SAP and complementary maintenance platforms.
- Experience supporting:
- Predictive maintenance.
- Reliability improvement.
- Data-driven decision making.
- Asset health monitoring.
- Experience defining and enforcing automation and electrification standards across multiple sites.
- Strong understanding of the battery limit boundary between HME maintenance and Engineering.
- Experience delivering training and building OT capability within operational teams.
- Experience working with OEMs, technology vendors, and integration partners.
