Underwriting & Portfolio Operations Intern (on-site)

Most fintech startups talk about operational excellence — few actually build it from the ground up. At Cloover, we're processing financing for thousands of solar, heat pump, and EV installations across Germany and Austria, and we need someone who wants to get into the engine room and help it run better.

As an Underwriting & Portfolio Operations Intern, you'll work across both sides of our financing engine: onboarding and monitoring the installer partners we fund, and supporting the full customer financing lifecycle — from underwriting documentation to payment reconciliation, compliance checks, and process automation. You'll work directly alongside the Portfolio Management, Operations, and Risk teams. This is a 6-month internship with real responsibility, not a shadow programme. You'll get an inside view of how a fast-scaling climate fintech runs operational finance across markets — connecting underwriting, installer onboarding, compliance, payments, and customer operations end-to-end — and build the AI and automation skills that most finance roles won't give you for years.

You'll report to the Head of Portfolio Management and work within a cross-functional team spanning Portfolio Management, Operations, Risk, and Compliance.

  • Onboard new installer partners — collect and review documentation, run the required checks, and get them set up cleanly so they can start financing installations fast.
  • Monitor the installer portfolio on an ongoing basis — track partner activity and performance, flag anything that drifts outside expectations, and escalate early.
  • Own end-to-end support across the customer financing lifecycle — from underwriting documentation through to ongoing servicing — ensuring accuracy and completeness at every stage.
  • Prepare, validate, and reconcile payment data, invoices, and partner settlements, catching discrepancies before they become problems.
  • Handle operational case management: investigate issues, document outcomes, and close the loop with internal stakeholders without letting things fall through the cracks.
  • Use AI tools and coding assistants to identify and automate repetitive manual tasks, building lightweight scripts that free the team to focus on higher-order work.

We care more about how you think and what you've built than where you've been. Here's what will set you up for success in this role:

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Operations, or a related field — and ready to apply it in a fast-moving environment.
  • Works through complex operational data methodically: catches the error in row 847, documents why it happened, and closes the loop.
  • Comfortable in Excel or Google Sheets and at least curious about SQL — you don't need to be a data engineer, but you're not afraid of a pivot table or a basic query.
  • Uses AI tools (Claude, Claude Code, or similar) as a natural part of daily work — not as a novelty, but as a productivity layer you've already integrated into how you operate.
  • Strong written and verbal English, and communicates clearly — stakeholders across Operations, Risk, and Portfolio should always know where something stands.
  • Takes ownership without being chased: if something's broken, you flag it; if something's slow, you find a way to speed it up.
  • Based in Berlin and energized by being in the room. We're intentionally office-first — decisions get made in real time, prototypes get stress-tested over lunch, and the founding team is ten meters away. If that's how you thrive, you'll feel at home here.

Nice to have (but not required):

  • Experience with BI or data visualisation tools (Metabase, Looker, or similar)
  • German language proficiency (B2 or above)

Don't meet every requirement? Apply anyway. We hire for potential and perspective — credentials are a starting point, not a ceiling.

We keep things transparent and respect your time. Most go from first call to offer in under three weeks.

  • Intro call (30 min) — We want to understand what you're looking for, not just screen your CV.
  • Hiring manager interview (30 min) — We go deep: your experience, your thinking, how you approach problems.
  • Case study (1 hour) — You get the brief in advance. We care about your approach — not whether you land on the right answer.
  • Offer & signed contract.

Need any adjustments at any stage? Just let us know.

  • Competitive pay. Fair compensation for your time and effort — tailored to the Berlin market for internships.

  • AI-native & unthrottled. Unlimited enterprise-grade AI — no caps, no approval process. Every role, every team. The grunt work disappears so you can focus on what actually requires human judgment.

  • Real ownership on a real mission. From day one you're shaping decisions that impact thousands of installers. We're not just building software — we're powering the energy transition across Europe.

  • Grow faster than anywhere else. You'll work directly alongside the founding team and world-class investors. If you're building toward your own venture one day, there's no better room to be in.

  • Das Wesentliche, richtig gemacht. Büro in Prenzlauer Berg mit neuester Apple-Hardware, kostenloses Frühstück und Abendessen, eine gut bestückte Küche, regelmäßige Team-Events, 25 Urlaubstage, Urban Sports Club (M), Mitarbeiterrabatte, ein voll übernommenes Deutschlandticket und unser eigener grüner Stromtarif ohne Grundgebühr.
