Position Overview

Jefferies is seeking a Vice President, State and Local Tax to join its Tax Department. The role will support the firm’s state and local tax function across income/franchise tax, indirect tax, apportionment, audits, compliance, provision, planning, and business advisory matters.

The successful candidate will bring strong technical knowledge of U.S. state and local tax rules, experience in financial services or complex multinational organizations, and the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment. This individual will partner closely with federal tax, finance, accounting, legal, regulatory reporting, business units, external advisors, and tax authorities.

This is a highly visible role within the Tax Department and will require a hands-on professional with strong analytical, project management, communication, and stakeholder management skills.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the firm’s state and local tax compliance process, including income, franchise, gross receipts, commercial activity, and other state-level tax filings.
  • Review and analyze state tax returns, workpapers, apportionment calculations, modifications, credits, and supporting documentation.
  • Assist with the preparation and review of state tax provision calculations, including current and deferred tax balances, uncertain tax positions, valuation allowances, and related financial statement disclosures.
  • Manage and support state and local tax audits, information requests, notices, appeals, and controversy matters.
  • Research and analyze state and local tax technical issues, including nexus, apportionment, sourcing, combined reporting, market-based sourcing, allocation of income, and financial services-specific tax rules.
  • Monitor legislative, regulatory, and administrative developments across relevant state and local jurisdictions and assess potential impact to Jefferies.
  • Partner with federal tax, finance, accounting, legal, regulatory reporting, and business teams to evaluate state tax implications of business initiatives, legal entity changes, transactions, restructurings, and new products.
  • Support state tax planning initiatives and identify opportunities to improve tax efficiency while maintaining appropriate risk controls.
  • Assist with state effective tax rate analysis, cash tax forecasting, and tax attribute tracking.
  • Coordinate with external advisors on compliance, provision, planning, and audit matters.
  • Support tax technology, process improvement, automation, and data quality initiatives within the state tax function.
  • Maintain well-organized, auditable documentation in support of compliance, provision, audit, and planning positions.
  • Prepare technical memoranda, management summaries, and internal presentations related to state and local tax matters.
  • Help manage tax calendars, deadlines, workflows, and deliverables across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior team members, as applicable.
Candidate Profile
  • 7–10+ years of relevant state and local tax experience, preferably within financial services, banking, broker-dealer, asset management, investment banking, or a large corporate / public accounting environment.
  • Strong technical knowledge of U.S. state and local income/franchise tax concepts.
  • Experience with state tax compliance, provision, audits, and tax research.
  • Familiarity with issues relevant to complex financial institutions, including apportionment, sourcing, nexus, combined reporting, intercompany transactions, and legal entity structures.
  • Strong understanding of ASC 740 principles as they relate to state taxes.
  • Experience managing or supporting state tax audits and responding to tax authority inquiries.
  • Ability to analyze complex tax rules and communicate conclusions clearly to tax and non-tax stakeholders.
  • Strong Excel, analytical, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Ability to operate independently, manage multiple deadlines, and work effectively in a fast-paced, detail-oriented environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • High professional judgment, integrity, discretion, and attention to control-oriented processes.
Preferred Qualifications
  • CPA, JD, LLM in Taxation, or Master’s in Taxation preferred.
  • Experience at a Big Four accounting firm, major financial institution, investment bank, broker-dealer, asset manager, or multinational corporation.
  • Experience with tax provision software, compliance software, data automation tools, or ERP systems.
  • Familiarity with state and local tax issues impacting broker-dealers, investment banking, capital markets, asset management, and other financial services businesses.
  • Experience supervising junior professionals or managing external service providers.
  • Strong research skills using tax research platforms and state tax authority guidance.

Primary Location: New York Full Time Salary Range of $140,000-$150,000
