Warranties Technician

PURPOSE OF ROLE

The Warranties Technician is responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, repair, and processing of warranty and out-of-warranty claims across a range of devices including HP Laptops, MacBooks, smartphones, smartwatches, and earbuds. The role requires a methodical, customer-first approach to device troubleshooting and repair, ensuring all work meets manufacturer standards and HP Stores service level agreements.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Device Assessment & Diagnostics

  • Receive and assess devices submitted for warranty or repair, conducting thorough hardware and software diagnostics.
  • Accurately identify faults across HP Laptops, MacBooks, Android and iOS smartphones, smartwatches, and wireless earbuds.
  • Document all findings clearly in the repair management system prior to any repair work commencing.

Repairs & Technical Work

  • Perform hardware repairs including screen replacements, battery replacements, keyboard/trackpad repairs, charging port repairs, and motherboard-level fault resolution.
  • Carry out warranty repairs in accordance with HP, Apple, and relevant OEM service guidelines.
  • Manage repair parts inventory, including logging parts usage and flagging low stock timeously.
  • Handle data back-up, OS reinstallation, firmware updates, and factory resets where required.

Warranty Processing & Administration

  • Process warranty claims accurately, ensuring all required documentation, proof of purchase, and fault reports are completed per manufacturer requirements.
  • Liaise with manufacturer warranty portals and supplier service desks to log, track, and escalate claims.
  • Maintain detailed records of all repairs, parts used, turnaround times, and claim outcomes.
  • Communicate repair status updates to customers and front-of-house staff in a timely manner.

Quality & Compliance

  • Ensure all repair work meets quality control standards before devices are returned to customers.
  • Adhere to HP Stores' internal policies, health and safety guidelines, and electrostatic discharge (ESD) protocols.
  • Flag recurring faults or product defect patterns to the Warranties Operations Manager.

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES REQUIRED

Technical Skills

  • Proven hands-on hardware repair experience across laptops (HP and/or MacBook) — minimum 3 years.
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting ability across mobile devices (Android & iOS), smartwatches, and earbuds/TWS devices.
  • Solid understanding of component-level diagnostics including RAM, SSD/HDD, display panels, and battery health.
  • Experience working with warranty management systems or repair ticketing platforms.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical service manuals and wiring diagrams.
  • Familiarity with ESD safety protocols and best practices for handling sensitive electronic components.

Soft Skills & Behavioural Competencies

  • Strong attention to detail and methodical approach to fault-finding.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple repair jobs simultaneously.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills — able to explain technical issues to non-technical customers.
  • High level of personal accountability and integrity in handling customer devices.
  • Collaborative team player who can also work independently with minimal supervision.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Matric / Grade 12 (NQF Level 4) — required.
  • Certificate or Diploma in Electronics, Computer Hardware, IT, or a related technical field — required.
  • 3–5 years' practical experience in device repair and warranty servicing — required.

ADVANTAGEOUS CERTIFICATIONS

The following certifications are not mandatory but will be considered a significant advantage during the selection process:

HP / PC Laptop Specific

  • HP Certified Professional (HP Sales & Services Certification)
  • CompTIA A+ Certification — hardware and software troubleshooting industry standard.
  • Microsoft Certified: Modern Desktop Administrator Associate — advantageous for Windows OS-level support.

Apple / MacBook Specific

  • Apple Certified Mac Technician (ACMT)
  • Apple Certified iOS Technician (ACiT) — for iPhone and iPad repairs.
  • Completion of Apple Service Training modules via Apple GSX (Global Service Exchange).

Mobile & Wearables

  • Samsung Authorized Service Technician Certification — advantageous for Samsung mobile/wearable repairs.
  • Huawei Authorized Service Certification — relevant for Huawei mobile and wearable device repairs.

General Technical Certifications

  • CompTIA Network+ — beneficial for connectivity-related diagnostics.
