Welding & Fabrication

  • Perform SMAW and FCAW welding on structural steel components per project specifications

  • Fit, align, and weld steel frames, supports, beams, platforms, handrails, and structural assemblies.

  • Read and interpret blueprints, welding symbols, WPS (Welding Procedure Specifications), and construction drawings.

  • Verify materials and joint preparations meet quality requirements before welding

Quality & Compliance

  • Produce welds that meet applicable code requirements (project-specific standards).

  • Participate in weld inspections and repair work as needed.

  • Maintain compliance with company welding qualifications and certifications.

  • Document weld activities such as heat input, filler metals, and weld maps when required.

Field Work Execution Responsibilities

  • Operate oxyfuel cutting, grinding, and other metalworking tools safely.

  • Perform field fabrication, modifications, and repairs in elevated, confined, or difficult-access locations.

  • Must have knowledge of geometry, physical properties of metal, and welding techniques.

  • Layout, position, aligns, cut, assemble, and fit metal components together in various body positions and in various places.

  • Work alongside rigging, structural, and construction teams to complete installations.

  • Must be able to work at heights as required

Safety

  • Follow all jobsite safety rules, including PPE requirements, fall protection, and hot-work procedures.

  • Conduct pre-task hazard assessments and maintain a safe work area.

  • Report unsafe conditions or equipment issues immediately.

Qualification Highlights

  • Must pass company-required weld qualification tests by QUAL-SOP-14.5.3

  • Must have 4+ years of industrial welding experience.

  • Must have all required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

  • Ability to work outdoors, at heights, and in physically demanding environment

  • Proficient with grinders, cutting torches, and other fabrication tools

  • Must be able to meet all physical requirements.

  • Must have all the tools

  • Must have reliable transportation.

  • Possesses the ability to work effectively team up with other employees.

  • Must be able and willing to assist with other activities while not actively welding.

  • Attention to detail

  • Mechanical aptitude

  • Ability to follow written procedures (WPS, ITPs, etc.)

Preferred Additional Qualification

  • Current Zachry or Zachry ROF’ed employee.

  • Former experience working with Zachry Industrial, Inc.

  • Previous experience in this position with Zachry Industrial, Inc.

  • Current Zachry Certification.

  • Experience working as an Industrial Pipe Fitter.

  • Former experience working on a new construction project.

Reporting to:

This position does not have any direct reports; however, the position will work closely with and oversee on occasion of helper and labor positions. The position will hold a positional and expertise authority of the helper and laborer positions.

Physical Requirements

  • Employees will be required to adhere to large amounts of standing, walking, bending, squatting, sitting and lifting.

  • Will talk and hear to communicate.

  • Will use arms and hands to signal, grab, hold, turn, push, and pull objects, materials, controls and tools.

  • May be required to pick up, lift, carry and move up to 50lbs.

  • Will work at heights, climb ladders and stairways, and may occasionally work off platforms/scaffolding using the appropriate fall protection requirements.

  • Must be able to work in all weather conditions (including heat, rain, cold and wind) while wearing appropriate PPE.

  • Will be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to hard hat, safety glasses/spoggles, ear plugs, masks/respirators, hi-vis safety vests, leather gloves and leather steel-toed work boots.

Certification Required: Weld Test

  • ZII-007 (0.5” CS Plate) SMAW (E7018) 3 positions 2G, 3G, 4G.

  • ZII-008 (0.5” CS Plate) SMAW (E309) 3 positions 2G, 3G, 4G. (This weld test is optional, by Superintendent request).

  • ZII-016 (0.5” CS Plate) FCAW (E71T1-M) 3 positions 2G, 3G, 4G. (This weld test is optional, by Superintendent request).

Every welder qualification test must first pass visual testing per ASME Section IX paragraph QW-302.4 and meet the requirements of ASME Section IX QW-194 in addition to the following:

  • No linear indications allowed,

  • No visible porosity allowed,

  • No incomplete fusion (cold lap) allowed,

  • No tungsten craters or arc strikes/arc blow/arc marks allowed,

  • No slag allowed,

  • No incomplete penetration allowed,

  • External reinforcement shall not exceed 1/8 in.,

  • Complete fusion of weld metal and base metal,

  • Undercut shall not exceed 1/32 in., (0.8 mm). No blending with a file or post weld grinding is allowed, only wire brushing.

If a welder is assigned 2 different welding processes (i.e., SMAW and FCAW) or F Number (i.e., F4 and F5) as a structural welder, all six (6) position tests shall be completed in 1 day
