Position Purpose

The Work-Study Senior Student Associate will provide marketing, and social media support to the Texas Materials Institute (TMI) and the Materials Science & Engineering (MSE) graduate program. This position offers hands-on experience in university operations and event coordination within an academic environment.

The Sr. Student Associate will support the Institute's social media, video content, marketing, website, and newsletter activities. This position is ideal for a student who is creative, detail-oriented, comfortable with digital media, and interested in communications, marketing, video production, and content development.

The student will assist with capturing photo and video content in labs, classrooms, events, and other department activities; editing and organizing media content; updating social media platforms and website content; and supporting newsletters and marketing initiatives. The student may also assist with promoting Institute's news, events, research highlights, and outreach efforts.


Students must be eligible for work-study for the Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 semester.

Responsibilities

  • Capture photos and videos of lab activities, classroom activities, seminars, events, student activities, and other Institute-related programs.

  • Edit short videos, photos, and digital media content for use on social media, newsletters, websites, and marketing materials.

  • Assist with maintaining and updating website content, including news items, event information, faculty and student highlights, research accomplishments, and general Institute updates.

  • Support monthly newsletter preparation by gathering content, organizing images, formatting updates, and assisting with written communications.

  • Maintain digital files, media libraries, and communications materials in an organized and accessible manner.

  • Assist with other marketing, outreach, and communications projects as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be eligible for Federal Work-Study or university work-study employment.

  • Current undergraduate or graduate student in good academic standing.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Interest in social media, marketing, communications, video production, digital media, or related areas.

  • Basic knowledge of social media platforms such as Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, X/Twitter, and YouTube.

  • Ability to take photos and videos using a phone, camera, or other recording equipment.

  • Detail-oriented, dependable, and able to complete assigned tasks in a timely manner.

  • Ability to maintain professionalism when representing the Institute online and in person.

  • Willingness to learn and follow Institute branding, communication standards, and university guidelines.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with video editing software such as Adobe Premiere Pro, iMovie, Final Cut Pro, Canva, CapCut, or similar tools.

  • Experience creating social media posts, short videos, graphics, or newsletters.

  • Familiarity with website content management systems.

  • Basic graphic design skills using Canva, Adobe Express, Photoshop, Illustrator, or similar platforms.

  • Interest in science, engineering, research, higher education, or university communications.

  • Prior experience assisting with marketing, communications, photography, videography, or event promotion.

Salary Range

$20.00 / hour

Weekly Scheduled Hours

Maximum 19 hours/week

Working Conditions

  • This position may involve working in an office setting, attending department events, visiting labs or classrooms to capture content, and completing digital media tasks on a computer.

  • Some assignments may require walking between buildings or attending events during scheduled work hours.

  • May work around standard office conditions

  • Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation

Schedule

  • Work schedule is flexible based on the student’s class schedule and department needs. Some occasional event coverage may be requested with advance notice.

Supervision

  • The student will report to designated department Manager and will receive guidance on content priorities, social media expectations, website updates, branding standards, and communication procedures.
