As a Youth & Family Director at the YMCA, you will play a key leadership role in creating meaningful experiences for children, families, staff, volunteers, and members. This is a highly visible position that combines program leadership, staff development, relationship building, community engagement, and operational oversight.
What You'll Do
On any given day, you may be supervising youth programs, coaching staff, responding to member needs, coordinating facility space, planning family events, reviewing budgets, developing new programming opportunities, or building partnerships within the community. You will lead KidsZone, KidsClub, STEAM, and family programming while ensuring participants have a safe, welcoming, and engaging experience.
You will recruit, hire, train, schedule, and develop staff and volunteers while providing ongoing coaching and performance feedback. You will also oversee program quality, participant satisfaction, facility and equipment readiness, and fiscal responsibility.
Success in this role requires balancing people leadership with operational responsibilities while maintaining a strong focus on participant experience, staff engagement, and community impact.
Successful Program Directors:
- Build positive relationships with members, participants, staff, volunteers, and community partners.
- Create high-quality programs that engage children and families.
- Develop and retain strong teams through effective hiring, training, and coaching.
- Manage budgets responsibly while growing participation and program impact.
- Respond to challenges with professionalism, flexibility, and a solutions-focused mindset.
- Deliver exceptional customer service and foster a welcoming environment for all.
- Model YMCA values and create an inclusive culture where everyone feels they belong.
What You Should Expect
This is an active, hands-on leadership position. While some responsibilities are administrative, much of your time will be spent interacting with staff, participants, families, and members throughout the facility and community.
The role requires flexibility and may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events. Priorities can shift quickly, and you may be called upon to address staffing needs, participant concerns, facility issues, or emergency situations.
You should expect to spend time:
- Supervising and supporting staff and volunteers.
- Leading and participating in youth and family programming.
- Managing multiple priorities and deadlines simultaneously.
- Responding to member questions, concerns, and feedback.
- Working both indoors and outdoors depending on programming needs.
- Being visible and engaged throughout the facility rather than working exclusively from an office.
The Rewards
This position offers the opportunity to make a direct impact on the lives of youth and families while helping strengthen the community.
You will have the opportunity to:
- Help children learn, grow, and succeed.
- Mentor and develop future leaders.
- Build meaningful relationships with families and community partners.
- Create programs that bring people together and improve lives.
- Contribute to the YMCA's mission of youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
- See the results of your work reflected in the success of participants, staff, and the community.
Why This Role May Not Be for You
This position may not be a good match if you:
- Prefer a predictable workday with limited interruptions or changing priorities.
- Enjoy working independently most of the time and prefer minimal interaction with staff, members, participants, or families.
- Are uncomfortable addressing performance concerns, coaching staff, or having difficult conversations.
- Prefer a role focused solely on administration rather than balancing office work with hands-on program leadership.
- Do not enjoy working in an environment where evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events may be required.
- Become frustrated by the fast pace and occasional unpredictability that comes with youth programs, camps, family events, and facility operations.
- Prefer highly structured routines and are uncomfortable adapting to changing needs, staffing challenges, or participant concerns.
- Are not energized by building relationships with children, families, volunteers, community partners, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
Is This Role Right for You?
You may thrive in this position if you:
- Enjoy leading, coaching, and developing people.
- Are energized by working with children and families.
- Can balance multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Communicate effectively with diverse groups of people.
- Take initiative and work independently.
- Enjoy problem-solving and finding creative solutions.
- Are passionate about community impact and the YMCA mission.
- Find fulfillment in helping others grow and succeed.
