Urban Drainage & Flood Modelling Engineer

We are seeking an Urban Drainage & Flood Modelling Engineer to join our Hydraulic Modelling team at WSP Bengaluru, GCC India. This role combines GIS and data automation skills with hydrologic and hydraulic modelling expertise, focusing on urban water runoff, stormwater drainage, and cloudburst resilience in a northern European context. Experience working on Nordic projects or collaborating with Northern European teams is highly valued, as it provides familiarity with project types, regulatory frameworks, and typical workflows.

The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in preparing spatial data, building and optimizing hydraulic models, and designing solutions that protect cities from extreme rainfall and flooding.

Key Responsibilities

  • GIS & Data Preparation: Manage large spatial datasets, prepare maps, and automate workflows using FME and Python.
  • Hydraulic Modelling: Develop and run models in MIKE+, MIKE21, VASP and SCALGO LIVE to simulate urban runoff, stormwater drainage, and cloudburst scenarios.
  • Urban Drainage Design: Contribute to the planning and design of stormwater infrastructure including detention basins, sewers, and overland flow paths.
  • Flood Risk Analysis: Assess catchments, calculate peak flows, and prepare flood maps and mitigation strategies for urban environments.
  • Hydraulic Modelling of streams: Hydraulic calculations for open channel flows in rivers and streams, including flow capacity, water levels, and flood extent assessment under varying hydrological conditions.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with WSP Denmark teams on projects ensuring reproducible workflows and compliance with national standards.
  • Result Visualization: Create clear, compelling visualizations of hydraulic model outputs, including flood maps and longitudinal profiles.

Types of Projects

  • Urban flood protection and cloudburst resilience
  • Smart city stormwater drainage networks
  • Hydraulic modelling input preparation and visualization
  • Green stormwater infrastructure (SuDS)
  • Municipal sewage and drainage system upgrades

Expected Outputs / KPIs

  • Deliver highly accurate GIS and hydraulic modelling inputs with minimal errors.
  • Produce reproducible workflows and clear documentation.
  • Provide high‑quality visualizations and engineering outputs that support decision‑making.
  • Collaborate effectively across regions, ensuring alignment with Denmark’s project requirements.

Profile Requirements

  • Education: Master’s in Environmental or Water Resources Engineering.
  • Experience: 3–7 years in urban drainage, hydrology, or hydraulic modelling.
  • Primary Software Proficiency: QGIS, MIKE+, MIKE21, FME.
  • Secondary Software Proficiency: SWMM/PCSWMM, HEC‑RAS, Python.
  • Technical Expertise: Rainfall‑runoff estimation methods, GIS mapping.
  • Language: English (professional proficiency).
  • Other: Strong collaboration skills, attention to detail, and ability to work across international teams.

BGV:

  • Employment with WSP India is subject to the successful completion of a background verification (“BGV”) check conducted by a third-party agency appointed by WSP India.
  • Candidates are advised to ensure that all information provided during the recruitment process — including documents uploaded — is accurate and complete, both to WSP India and its BGV partner”.
