Assistant Produce Manager

Position Summary

The Assistant Produce Manager supports the Produce Manager in leading all aspects of the produce department, including product quality, merchandising, inventory management, and team performance. This role helps ensure a fresh, full, and visually appealing department while delivering an exceptional customer experience and driving sales results.

Key Responsibilities Department Operations
  • Assist in overseeing daily operations including stocking, rotation, and display of produce items
  • Ensure all products meet freshness, quality, and food safety standards
  • Support execution of planograms, promotions, and seasonal merchandising sets
  • Help manage inventory levels to maintain in-stock conditions without overstocking
Customer Service
  • Provide excellent customer service and product knowledge to assist shoppers
  • Respond to and resolve customer concerns in a timely and professional manner
  • Promote fresh items, seasonal produce, and value offerings to drive sales
Inventory & Shrink Control
  • Support ordering and inventory processes to ensure accuracy and efficiency
  • Ensure proper rotation using FIFO (First-In, First-Out) methods
  • Minimize shrink through proper handling, culling, and storage practices
  • Assist with physical inventories and department audits
Team Leadership & Development
  • Support supervision of produce associates to ensure productivity and standards are met
  • Assist in training, coaching, and developing team members
  • Help foster a positive, team-driven work environment focused on accountability and results
Merchandising & Visual Standards
  • Maintain a clean, well-stocked, and visually appealing department
  • Build attractive displays that maximize sales and highlight promotions
  • Ensure accurate pricing, signage, and labeling at all times
Safety & Compliance
  • Follow all food safety, sanitation, and health regulations
  • Maintain proper handling procedures and temperature standards
  • Ensure a safe working environment by enforcing company policies and safety practices
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • 2+ years of produce, grocery, or retail experience preferred
  • Previous leadership experience is a plus
  • Strong communication, organization, and time management skills
  • Knowledge of produce handling and merchandising practices preferred
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 50 lbs frequently
  • Ability to work in wet and temperature-controlled environments
  • Continuous standing, walking, bending, and lifting
  • Flexible availability including early mornings, weekends, and holidays
